Yeah, they seem the most likely but it's only been certain sections of the press saying certain clubs have ruled themselves out, could be a smokescreen!

Higuain? Benzema? Madzukic (not really world class but not bad by any stretch of imagination)

Higuain would be an option, yes... I'm not convinced that he's any better than Costa but he's certainly of similar quality. A good alternative.

Benzema... I'd prefer Costa frankly, and it's far from certain he would perform in a premiership environment (just like we're discussing with Costa). Besides, the noises coming from Real suggest that they want to keep him - even if they sign Suarez.

As for Mandzukic - he's good, and perhaps more suited to the premiership, but as you say, not quite "world class". I'm holding out a faint hope that he might sign for Chelsea even with Costa on the roster... Top Premiership clubs play a lot of games (two domestic cups, alongside the league and CL), and having two strikers of this quality would allow for frequent rotation and plenty of game time for both. They could coexist. I expect he'll sign for a club where he can be the absolute #1 striker, but he's certainly a "Mourinho" type player - good work-rate and willing to track back a little when required.

Bringing in a top centre forward is always a risk (especially for Chelsea it seems...) but given the options right now I think Costa is probably the best bet. In an ideal world we would have landed Falcao, Cavani or Rooney last summer, and be holding a Premiership trophy right now. But it wasn't to be. Only time will tell whether Costa adapts to the Premiership environment. I'm hopeful, but slightly concerned. If he doesn't work out, well, at £32m he should hold his value reasonably well, and we can always go back to market next summer.

Heh - nice :p

Well, if he wants his name chanted match after match as a star player, then Chelsea isn't the place to be. Only smaller clubs can offer that kind of adoration (Napoli haven't won a league title since 1990).

But in all seriousness, only the "very top" clubs (Real, Barca, Bayern, Chelsea, Man U, City, PSG) can offer the kind of money and the chance to win trophies year after year that attract the best players. It's not "right", but it is what it is. The clubs with money and status poach the best players, and have the most success. Occasionally smaller clubs upset the balance (e.g. Atletico this year), but it's the exception rather than the rule.

Anyway, it's all moot at this point. The chance of a player like Higuain playing #2 to Costa (or even fighting for a #1 spot) is zero. So until Zlatan gets too old and PSG start looking for a new front-man, I don't see him moving.

Strange how we spent most of last summer trying to buy Fabregas for 40 million and now he's avail for less we aren't interested. Just about sums us up at the moment.

He's not definitely available, and you know.. Completely different manager.

Really don't know why I waste my time to tell you this though, you'll just carry on talking nonsense.

I think if we got him last year it would have proved to have been the wrong buy for us. Kagawa, Mata, Rooney all occupy the same position as what Fabregas would do. Makes no sense to buy Fabregas when we are covered for that kind of midfielder. Unless of course he plays much deeper but his skill set lends him to being a more offensive midfielder ?

so cesc and costa to chelsea how much more can they spend to meet ffp?

Why do they need to meet FFP? They're evidently not fussed about spending money, and the reduction in size of the CL squad to 21 isn't exactly an issue - most teams won't use more than 21 in the CL anyway - so the incentive to match FFP is far smaller than the incentive to buy a squad capable of winning the PL and CL.

Can see Costa picking up a few red cards in the PL, but look forward to see how he adapts, hopefully terribly... :)

Emre Can looks like a good signing for us and surprised we've pulled it off really, as it seems he was earmarked to go to Bayern next season.

EDIT: Atletico Madrid are denying any deal has been done for Costa... presume it's just a matter of paperwork though.
