UEFA Euro 2012 - Group D - ** spoilers ** (England, France, Sweden, Ukraine)

God you guys are a bunch of miserable gits! The glass is not half empty, but smashed into pieces :D
England are not going to win it, fair enough, doesn't mean you can't support them! They'll get out of the group stages at least!
Worst squad in the tournament? Give me a break!

It must be nice for Ukraine and Poland to have a team that represents their country because ours sure don't. I no longer support England or team GB in the Olympics.

This is classic England(and Liverpool fan lately) behaviour, before every tournament everyone utterly flat out convinces themselves England will lose every single game 10-0, and we'll lose to the worst teams in the tournament as well. Then we win one game and suddenly we've got a real shot at winning the whole thing, the flags come out, the hype goes into over drive, every single miniscule half decent pass from any of the countries favourite players is drooled over.... then we get spanked in a knock out stage and suddenly everyone is just harping on about how we were cheated out of something.

Its a joke how this country behaves, a realistic expectation and simply losing graciously to a much superior team and performance is just out of the question.

Don't believe Roy's decision to leave Rio out for one minute and Seedorf summed it up quite nicely then, if you lose your two first choice centre backs in the first game who ya gonna call?

Yep, Roy was lying through his teeth about it. Just put him on the bench if you need to, blimey. Leaving him out is pure stupidity.

Unless... Terry refused to play with him, or something. It wouldn't surprise me.

I can understand his decision to not bring Rio when cahill got injured, we have 4 cb's. If two get injured then we still have 2 to fill the role. We however only have 1 rb who has an injury concern. If he gets injured id rather have another rb filling hos role than a cb.
My only question is why kelly and not Richards?

He's essentially saying he's got his first 11 and a few backups with the rest of the squad being filled by youngsters who need International experience. If that's the case why did he choose Gerrard, Lampard, Parker and Barry for central midfield when they're all 30+ and probably won't feature in another big tournament :o

If the worst does happen and two central defenders get injured or they have a bad couple of games he's going to get torn a new one and rightly so imo.

Thinking about this Ferdinand thing in a bit more detail it's not as obvious as it first seems.

First of all, Ferdinand's been out of the England squad for quite some time with the likes of Lescott and Cahill being picked ahead of him in the squad. Then when you look at the initial squad Hodgson selected, he picked 3 CB's (all of which were being picked ahead of Ferdinand anyway) + Jones as cover for both CB and RB. Jagielka was then brought in to replace Barry meaning we then had 4 CB's + Jones covering (Jagielka also provides cover at RB and DM).

After Cahill got injured, did we need to bring in another CB? We still had as many CB's in the squad as were originally selected. I said all along that I thought Kelly was coming into the squad as a RB with Jones being the 4th CB and if you believe Hodgson (he said that he initially double checked on Walker before going for Kelly), that's exactly the case.

Anyone else thoroughly sick to death of the whole Rio Bloody Ferdinand debate now? (Not having a go at anyone here for talking about it btw). The media seem intent on talking about it every single day for the past month, whereas I'd had enough 10mins into Roy's first press conference, nobody wanted to talk about e.g. AOC's inclusion, just asking 100x about Rio being left out following but constant badgering any analysis for the next month.

He's at home, get over it and let's focus on the 23 players who are out there representing their nation.

Yes it's just a stick being prepared to beat Roy with. It makes total sense not to take another injury prone player who even his own manager thought wasn't up to the games.

If he took Rio and he was injured after 1 game they would have beat him with that as well.

Although I want England to get utterly spanked all over the place with the utterly awful squad, I feel for the set up Roy has walked into.

Oh well only 2 more days until Terry and co can start pouring out the cliches about playing for England.

Yes, the media should drop it. What's done is done and we need to just support the team now.

They seem more interested in the alleged racism and Rio than the football.

Are you not English, or?

Are you not English, or?

I am, but I don't see what that has to do with it. No more than you should be expected to support a British F1 team over a Italian one.

I detest the players, I detest the way the squads are put together how form has nothing to do with it. It's been this way for almost as long as I can remember. I detest the way 5 minutes after the team are knocked out they are laughing about smoking cigars like mission accomplished.

They don't care, nor do I. I hope they get routed. They are nothing I can relate to in any way. I look forward to more chest banging speeches from a bunch of players that don't even know the national anthem and can't be bothered to try and then struggle to string together 6 passes.

The only England star I remotely had any likings for is Lampard and he's on holiday.

:)

I'm looking forward to watching England without any expectation and therefore cannot be disappointed if we fail to get out of the group stage. I would like to think we will get out of the group, but even then the knock out rounds wont be too kind to us.

Still, with no expectation we might do well.

In relation to the Ferdinand saga, I think Roy is right. When he was named manager he stated he was looking beyond the Euro's (effectively writing it off before it started) and looking towards the WC qualifiers. In order to do this he needs to start looking towards players likely to be at his disposal at this stage, therefore Rio won't be needed.

However, he did need to not pick Lampard, Barry, Terry and Gerrard to fully emphasise this, but obviously leaving them all out would be suicidal (Rio was the obvious choice due to his indifferent season for United).

Fans and the media (mostly) have been crying out for a manager to start ditching the old guard in favour of giving future players the chance, as soon as one does so (regardless of the capacity) everyone is on his back.
