What film did you watch last night?

Lone Survivor
Given this is based on a true story and being a fan of the type of storyline I thought I'd give it a watch, plus I'm a bit of a Wahlberg fan (more Donnie than Mark TBH) so I hoped for the best. Plus it had 7.7 rating on IMDB so thought I'd give it a blast.

I could go on about the typical yahoo US soldier parts and the lack of character development but it's probably nothing that hasn't been said already. Overall it was an ok film, better than average but there were two particular scenes involving cliffs and rocks that I'm seriously wondering if they were true, I certainly had to suspend disbelief for those parts which (for me) spoilt the film somewhat.

Overall, reasonably enjoyable, very so so acting but much more could have been made of the story - but then as it's a true story you get what you're given! 6.5/10

True, according to Marcus Luttrell

You are welcome to challenge him on it, but being the only survivor (;)) and the fact that he would undo your head like a jam jar lid (:p) we will have to accept it lol

Film is pretty much true to the book (which is Marcus personal account)
Apart from (1) he crawled away (his back was broken from the rock falls) when he escaped (he walks in the film)
and (2) the end "battle" where the US turn up and kill all the bad guys - which never happened - it was a standoff between the villagers and the taliban which resulted in no fighting and the US extracting Marcus

Fair enough, wasn't disputing it but just found it pretty extreme (and painful to watch).

The Chinook scene was real as well? wow, somehow I imagine it wasn't quite as they portrayed it on the film.

yeah - lots of broken bones and things apparently (Marcus broke his back in several places doing it)

if you watch the special features they threw stuntmen down rocks and filmed it :p looks brutal - one stuntman broke his shoulder or something

the Chinnie is (apparently) true - (apart from overly typical USA sentimental "you can go first new guy" stuff, and also Marcus didn't know it crashed until after he was rescued). apparently it tried to land and a Taliban guy popped up and fired straight into the open ramp from a few meters away with an RPG

I watched "Edge of Tomorrow". Can see why it has struggled a bit, solid but lacking a little verve and interest. 6/10.

Watched "Lone Survivor" too. I'd give that 7/10.

Edge of Tomorrow - really enjoyed this - 8/10

X-Men: Days of Future Past - this too - 8/10

Both films although action have nice twists to the plot and the acting is very good all round.

The Grand Budapest Hotel

Wonderfully absurd, stunning visuals, great writing. Another fantastic film from Wes Anderson.

4/5

I'd give it a 4/10, but i haven't liked any of his movies. The over the top characters grate on me, gratuitous use of colour is an eyesore. Definately not my thing!

How to Train your Dragon 2 - 8.5 / 10

Excellent! If you liked the first one (and who doesn't?) then you will enjoy this too :)

And from a technical pov the animation is just incredible.
