What film did you watch last night?

Cloverfield 7.5 / 10

Seen it a few times and enjoy it every time, gf wasn't overly impressed though. I'm a fan of 'found footage' and hand held cam films, so this is right up my street

Sicario

Absolutely loved it. It reminded me a lot of Heat, in that it was all relatively realistic, and it was all very low key. There were no sweeping orchestral numbers blasting out in the big scenes, which really added to the tension. Benicio Del Toro stole the show, though Emily Blunt was also really good. Apparently people aren't too happy some aspect of Emily's character, although I can't really see why. Pacing was good...I really can't find anything major to fault it on.

10/10?

Knock Knock.

That new Keanu Reeves "thriller". The trailer lied to me. I was led to believe it would be a gritty thriller of sorts, but it mostly turned out to be a boob-fest with cheesy acting and Reeve's worst performance ever as a "MONSTERRRRRRRRR!!!".

Sad times.

3/10.

San Andreas 6.5/10

Strange movie. The destruction of the city never seemed real or important. I didn't get the feeling that it was a disaster. Just another day on the job for Ray.

I thought it was entertaining enough but can see why others would give it a very low rating.

The Thing - 8/10

Was recommended this by a few people and really enjoyed it. For it's age the effects were very good I thought and you can see that it has influence a lot of other horror films.

Not genuinely scary, but very tense. Didn't love the end, but wasn't too bothered

Ah yes the original is great and if I remember the remake wasn't actually that bad either.

Trainwreck
Although my wife and I enjoyed it, we both thought it would be funnier (along the lines of Bridesmaids etc). Still a decent film, and the funny parts had us cracking up, but could have been hilarious. 6/10

The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc. At almost 3 hours long, Luc Besson's controversial epic still holds up impressively well after 16 years.

For the most part historically accurate, it suffers somewhat from the curious choice of Mila Jovovovich in the title role (the real Joan was not a tall, blonde, blue-eyed wonder woman with perfect hair and a model's figure).

Nevertheless Ms Jovovovich delivers a stunningly visceral performance as the troubled young French person with an unspecified mental disorder and no boobs.

John H. Malkovich is perfect as always, playing his usual role of John H. Malkovich with the generic 'foreign accent' he adopts for these occasions. Dustin Hoffman smoulders in sinister fashion as the anonymous evil Jew.

Battle scenes are satisfyingly violent, with blood spraying, flesh tearing, and bones crunching all over the place. The film is peppered with understated black humour (proper black humour; not jokes about blacks) and one scene contains an amusing decapitation that fans of Besson will appreciate.

8/10.

Those Studio Ghibli style films can be a bit marmite and slow paced. Sometimes you need to be in the right kind of mood to watch one.

Maybe try Howl's Moving Castle instead. Princes Mononoke is one of may favourites.

Spirited Away wasn't all that great.

Mononoke, however, can't fail to impress :) It's much less light-hearted, darker, and more intense. Love that film.

Sicario 7/10

Nicely directed with some nice unusual sweeping and panning shots that I enjoyed. Even the thermal imaging and night vision was a cool effect.

Thought the story was a little slow and it was deliberately frustrating at times. In that I mean you felt the same frustrations the lead characters were feeling with regards to the plot. They didn't know it any more than you did and it grated on me slightly, with it all only really coming into place in the last act.

Good action flick though, very tense and some fantastic set-piece scenes.

I've finally done it, Cineworld Unlimited card ordered for me and the gf. More than worth it as I love going to the cinema and I'll easily make the money "back".

Bit disappointing that there is a small uplift for 3d, usually a quid or two but after a year you get upgraded to Unlimited Premium where all 3d viewings are free.

Which cinema do you go to? My Mrs is signed up for that but got really hacked off with the selection of films in Leigh. Fortunately the cinema in Bolton offers a better choice, so she gets her money's worth by going there a lot.

Usually the Leigh one as its only a 5 minute drive. I used to get free tickets each week from work but now I've switched companies its a different health plan and the perks and benefits are gone! Never really bothered me about the selection, all the films I want to see are usually on and usually managed to go every week (saw some right dross sometimes too! haha!).

Sometimes certain films have limited screenings. The last one I can think of was Kajaki when I had to go to Vue to see it as it was the only cinema it was released on! That was annoying, had to go to the Quays.
