T2 is a kids film in comparison to the original.
On it's own, no, it isn't a kids film. Compared to the original though, it kind of is.
That's not such a bad thing and it doesn't make it a bad film, but it did lose a fair bit of rawness and horror.
I would say T2 was Hollywood cashing in. It didn't offer anything new over the orginal. Basically the same story with a role change. Just a bigger budget, more action, CGI instead of stop motion effects etc.
The tone was lighter and having John Connor certainly didn't help. Asking Arnie to smile in T2 was just as cringeworthy as the comedy glasses in T3.
The tension of the original is without equal. The sequels never reached the heights of the T-800 busting into the 'safe' police station for example. For me it is perfection and should have ended there.
You are probably the only person on the planet who would think T2 shouldn't exist.
You are obviously entitled to your opinion but that's like 6billion vs 1.
If T2 was released today I think it would come under a lot more criticism.
It's an enjoyable enough film but unnecessary. Much like other films that get remade with bigger budgets, or foreign films that get a Hollywood remake, if you 'get' the original (despite its lesser accessibility) then there is no need for the later version.
If Star Wars come out today it would also come under a lot more criticism too. People will tear a new one to the whiny Mark Hamill character like they did with Christiansen's acting.
T2 isn't a remake, it is a continuation of the Terminator story. There is a difference. You might as well say Empire Strikes Back was unnecessary too.
T2 is not a different version of T1, it is a different movie to T1.
If Star Wars came out today and received criticism over someone's acting, then it shows it's not as great as everyone claims it to be.
If you rate a film objectively then good films stand the test of time. Good acting doesn't diminish over time, a good story doesn't either.
T2 essentially followed the same formula as the first. All it did was show you things that were explained or implied in the orginal. It was just a watered down version of the classic original.
Personally, I don't have a problem with T2.
It's a very good film in it's own right and was a landmark in cinema history for a number of reasons.
Was it a vehicle for the then groundbreaking FX? Maybe.
Was it a reasonable continuation of the story with a very good idea for how Sarah's character changed after the events of T1? Definitely IMO.
Do I wish it was darker and grittier?
Yes, but that's pretty much it.
Do I prefer T1? Yeah.
I am rating the film objectively and it is a hugely enjoyable movie. HUGELY !!!
It's not just my opinion, go see any poll or list or rating or question by any critic or any public poll.
Best movie ever
Best action movie ever
Best 90's movie ever
Best sequel ever
Best Science Fiction ever
T2 will be at the top or near the top on ALL those lists.
Not to mention T2 has not dated, even the T1000 looks pretty good today. That can't be said with a lot of other sci fi movies.
Well most of those Best Ofs that you have mentioned would also apply to the original Terminator.
So to anyone like me who can see through the special effects and formulaic nature of sequels, at its core what does T2 offer over the original?
I would describe T2 as a side dish compared to The Terminator.
Wow.. back to debatting T1 and T2 ... again ?![]()

Deal with it.
Nothing stopping you from discussing whatever film you want to discuss.
ED:
As I said, I think T2 offers a decent continuation. The character progression of Sarah was done brilliantly and made her character a legend for one thing.
While I do think the original is the best, I think T2 deserves more than side dish status - even if it did try a bit too hard to humanise the T-800 in some respects and should've gone for a balls out 18 cert.
