What film did you watch last night?

Gone girl. 8/10. Affleck and pike are both brilliant, the story is good and played out well. Not the first time I've seen it and it won't be the last.

Europa Report (2013) - 7/10 - I love Sci-fi but I'm never going into space, ever! This is what space travel looks like and until it's as comfortable as Star Trek makes it look i want no part of it lol.

Star Trek: Into Darkness - 8/10
I'm really enjoying these reboots. This is the second re-watch since I first saw it in the cinema and to be honest I did walk out of the cinema feeling cheated out of an original storyline (something all too familiar these days). Saying that, now a bit of time has passed and I now appreciate the nods to the past and certainly the excellent casting (IMO) gives you that affinity with the characters that I found with the original movie series cast – occasionally it’s a bit forced but there’s always a bit of cheese in any Star Trek incarnation.

Anyone who hasn't seen Star Trek: The Wrath of Kahn certainly wouldn't be missing out but I would dare say anyone who has may have felt, as I initially did, the clear (and intentional) similarities which of course were explained away by the new timeline from Star Trek 2009’s events (well worth a watch for anyone that hasn't seen it).

Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation - 5/10
Having started watching this film with my wife, she decided she’d had enough after ½ hour so I finished watching it by myself yesterday – she is not one for the obvious plot lines/holes and this them in spades. I did actually enjoy the film but only for the fantastic car/bike chase scene (wow!) and the stunts - the rest of the film is exactly what you expect from a 5 film franchise that hasn't invested anything into the story lines or characters. The twists were so blatantly obvious one could guess what was going to happen with ease.

Perhaps 5 is too harsh but the franchise has no excuses for not developing characters more and rides off their headline actor and the stunt work which is often the only redeeming feature.

If you’re stuck for something to watch and you’ve enjoyed the previous films then this is definitely much of the same. That car/bike chase is certainly worth 2 points alone!

The Machinist - 6/10

Very odd. some of it didn't make sense and was unexplained but still, ok enough. Just don't expect to be able to switch off and watch it

Just watched Siccario - 8/10

Good film with some tremendous acting. Not the cheeriest of tones or ending but a decent story thats well presented by all the actors.

Yesterday I watched:
The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared

It was a fantastic and hilarious movie. I seriously recommend it for good laughs 8.5/10. It's on Amazon Prime.

Trailer

Suffragette - well casted and acted domestic terrorism story set in early 20 century Britain like parallel universe where every man is one dimensional bar steward, child trader, coward or pedo. 4/10

The Man from UNCLE - 7.5/10

Really enjoyed this and some top notch action sequences (i remember watching the TV series as a kid on BBC 2 many years ago!)

However, i know this is a set up to how the characters meet etc, but there was no mention of UNCLE until the end of the movie, both were CIA/KGB throughout the entire movie. I was hoping for an earlier introduction to the agency and Waverley, the pen mics and other gadgets etc.

The Martian - 9/10

Some questions and observations:

First 3/4 of movie was amazing, but the last part i felt was creating drama for the sake of it:

a. A 'convertible into space' - wtf?

b. Creating and exploding a bomb in the Hermes?!

c. Iron Man - *shakes head*

There was no need for this and i think they could have created something else suspenseful, but less ridiculous!

Sean Bean - his acting was woeful and he seemed out of place. Certainly did not cast belief as a NASA Flight Director.

I know you have to suspend a few beliefs when watching a movie like this, but one thing i did not understand - the kid who brought the idea of slingshotting the Hermes around Earth - how was he aware of the Taiyang Shen Chinese when it was meant to be a Top Secret Chinese program?

But all in all, very suspenseful and emotional movie - Mattt Damon was superb.

Interstellar.

I tried watching this once before, but for some unknown reason I didn't get past the early stages. Glad I've finally got around to watching the rest. Surprised to see Matt Damon in it, too. Very good film 8.5 - 9 / 10.

Bone Tomahawk

This was a very long boring movie that only really picked up towards the end.

Its a Western horror and for me doesn't work at all. I was bored for the most part. Some of the acting is really bad...Apart from Kurt Russell for the most part. The editing dull the dialogue pretty ropey and the gore a bit meh.

6/10 for effort.

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) - 6/10 - After Childhood's End I've become interested in Arthur C Clarke and I really like his idea on the future of mankind and evolution. That being said the film while a great story, I found a struggle to watch.

The Danish Girl

I felt like the trailer gave away a lot of the story, and with it being about a trans-gender, I wasn't really fussed about this film - happy to wait till DVD. The missus was plenty excited and wanted to watch it now, so I was dragged in... I was surprised and quite enjoyed the film thanks to Alicia Vikander.

7/10.

Its a shame they had to make it into Downton Abby...the true people the story is based were not middle class but underground junkies.

The Intern. 6-7/10. Watchable popcorn flick. Not a great film.

The martian 9.5/10 Best film of 2015 for me. Matt Damon is excellent, it has a few issues but still works.
