What film did you watch last night?

I think he did a surprisingly good job, but at the end of the day he just isn't very good an actor I don't think. From what I remember, if he were to have worn a dodge-ball helmet throughout it would have made for a more enjoyable film :p

Passengers - 6/10

I was entertained enough, it looked great and I could watch Chris Pratt and the lovely Jennifer Lawrence in anything (I may have added a point or two simply for Miss Lawrence just looking good). Ended up all a bit silly though with a weird script at certain points. I doubt i'd watch it again unless to re-visit the visuals.

You're easily pleased....

Life must be great living in mediocrity. But not realising it :p

Hacksaw Ridge

WWII American Army Medic Desmond T. Doss, who served during the Battle of Okinawa, refuses to kill people, and becomes the first man in American history to receive the Medal of Honor without firing a shot.

Good film based on a true story. Worth a watch.

Not at all, I thought he was good. He was sarcastic at times but not in a usual comedy type way. He was also good in True Detective S2, so saying he can't act seems harsh.

I thought he was pretty good in TD too, complete u turn to his usual roles.

Split - 7/10

Good fun and one of the better Shyamalan movies, am sure McAvoy had fun making this. But like most it probably wouldn't be quite as impactful second time around. Some weird and annoying things:

The 2 girls the main character was kidnapped with, suddenly boom just dead, the end, don't think we even saw one die and can only assume he was eating the other one judging by the sounds. The main girls uncle side story, assuming the look to the cop at the end when the uncle is coming to pick her up is supposed to be her 'pure empowering' moment and she's going to say no but didn't hit home. Lastly I had some mutton mention to watch Unbreakable before watching this therefore cementing the fact there was a link and I was essentially waiting the entire film for it and kinda guessed what it would be, although was nice to actually see Bruce Willis in the role as I thought they just mention 'Mr Glass' at some point, or the girls father died in a train accident (its mentioned he is taking a train at one point) which was the starting of Unbreakable but nope, heart attack.

Certainly looking forward to his next effort.

Agree I thought S2 of true detective was unfairly savaged by some. S1 may be better even with silly ending but I liked the difference.

The Painted Veil. It's the 1920s, and Edward Norton is a doctor with an English accent. He marries Naomi Watts, who's a bit of a stroppy tart. He takes her to China, and she has an affair, so he issues her with an ultimatum: he divorces her, or she accompanies him on a jolly trip to the middle of nowhere help out with a cholera epidemic. Hilarity ensues. Complete with dead bodies, occasional poo, and a whole bunch of nuns.

It was pretty good.

just got back from hacksaw ridge, an amazing film, just behind saving private ryan, far ahead of other recent ones, well worth watching 9/10. pretty funny in places as well.

The longer the time passes, the more I think Hacksaw Ridge is average, or just above average and rather forgettable, in both as a war movie or action movie.

The Magnificent Seven (2016) -- 6/10

None of the M7's can beat Seven Samurai for character development and visual composition; still, I liked the action and the cast. The exposition was kind of nerfed, but you can piece together the backstories for most of the key characters well enough from what's left in this cut. Mind, this is not the same as building much emotional investment in them. Chisolm, Bogue and Goodnight all had potential left unexplored as character studies in human folly, vice and redemption, or indeed the clash between the romanticism and freedom of the Wild West versus the grim reality and what it did to people whom it crushed. Better writers and an extra 20 minutes to make use of them would've helped massively.

Worth a watch on a slow evening.

Hidden figures. 8/10

I was expecting this year's appease the people of colours complaints lack of film nomination but I was majorly surprised that the film was actually rather good on its own and whilst it covers the topic of segregation in the 60s it doesn't ram it down your throat and force you to gargle it for 2h.

Totally interesting and I never knew about these fascinating people and their amazing skills.

Arrival: 6/10. Thought provoking but slow. I regard it like "The Sixth Sense" in that, once you know the story, it's not something worth revisiting. Several "WTF, that's dumb" moments. The aliens were merely a plot device in a completely different type of story.

Hacksaw Ridge: 7/10. Looks great and has some good moments (I loved Vaughn's handing out of nicknames) but, frankly, I wasn't hugely engaged in the battle scenes (which is odd). Despite it being an amazing tale, it somehow just lacked much emotional resonance. My main gripe though was thinking "what moron thought having the start point of an assault being a vertical cargo net was a good idea?!"

The tone was wrong for me...There is no doubt that Mel Gibson knows how to direct a movie but some parts were a bit Tropic Thunder IMO.
