What film did you watch last night?

Dunkirk was brilliant. Anyone who didn't like it .... has different taste to me.

Watched Ratcatcher the other day. Weird 90s film based in Scotland. Can't tell why but it's really stuck with me. It's not even about an awful lot, it's just a weirdly impactful film. Would be interested in others thoughts if anyone else has seen it.

Better Watch Out (2017) - 8/10

A fresh take on the home invasion formula, but it definitely loses a lot when it moves away from the more traditional horror elements.

It’s still disturbing to watch thanks to the subject matter and acting of the lead characters, but it goes on for a bit too long and the ending could have been better.

Some of the supporting cast are weak, but it’s still a good film.

. I doubt you'll find anything out there resembling this : https://imgur.com/a/aHO1s

Here's lots of pics of them standing in straight lines when NOT under fire -

Dunkirk (9/10).

Yes, very good if the pacing was a bit strange at time - we seemed to be cutting from day to night scenes with "Tommy" with no real idea of chronological order. Best performance for me was Mark Rylance's steadfast mariner who made the crossing at great personal cost closely followed by Tom Hardy's Spitfire pilot. The very matter of fact story telling with no extraneous romantic entanglements or unrealistic heroics added to the atmosphere as did the Hans Zimmer music score if a bit strange at first.

It certainly made you stop and think about the sacrifice the guys (and woman) who were there made and I have made a mental note to read up on the history to see if the German commanders who ordered the machine gunning and bombing of a routed and retreating army were ever brought to task.

As a train crank the only thing that ruined the ending (a bit) was the use of a modernised BR Mark One coach (Swanage Railway?) which would not have been seen with that style of interior until the late 1960's or early 1970's. Mark Ones as built were not introduced until 1951 - a number of the preserved railways in the south of England have genuine pre-Nationalisation Maunsell or Bulleid designed coaching stock which would have been more authentic. Not rivet counting, just that this stood out like a sore thumb at the end of a movie which had tried so hard to immerse you in the period atmosphere.

:D

In fairness, it can be jarring when you see something you know to be wrong because you have super specialist knowledge of something... but still :p

The Disaster Artist - 9/10. Really funny, I think you'll need to have seen The Room to fully appreciate it but even without seeing it, I think it'd be enjoyable. James Franco was brilliant as Tommy Wiseau, and the recreations of some of the film's "best" scenes was great.

Some Kind of Wonderful.

You know, the more of John Hughes’ stuff I watch, the more I think Ferris Bueller and The Breakfast Club were his only good pieces of work. I mean, it’s better than Sixteen Candles, but that’s not a very high bar to clear.

Still, it’s got Lea Thompson in her underwear, so I guess that’s alright.

The Force Awakens 6/10

Watched this again. Its not that bad i guess. Not a patch on the originals but a few bits had that sw feeling.

One reason why i guess i was affected by the ending is my dad actually looks a lot like old han solo...hrmm weird haha. (very similar facial expressions and hang dog look)

Dunkirk 7/10

Did not like the music playing throughout at all. Whatever it was trying to do did not work for me...although i did like that classical piece that played at the pivotal moment. Elgar was it?

But very watchable. Not as good as Nolan's other efforts tho (Interstellar etc)

As a war film i found it a little bit out of joint..hard to explain. I think of stuff like saving private ryan...band of brothers etc when i think of how war films should be. This had a more detached feel about it. I think i will have to watch it again....Nolan does not usually miss the mark when he's trying to say something.....in this film it didnt feel as if we were down deep in the mud. of the grimness and guts of war...so i suspect Nolan wants to say something else. so brb with that.

Kingsman the Golden Circle 6.9/10

Not bad. Watchable but a bit of a rehash of the first but just not as good. Elton John was hilarious tho :D

Star Wars: The Last Jedi - 3/10 - SPOILER FREE - I liked Ep7 but knew it was flawed yet despite that it still "felt" like a Star Wars film and the 10 year old inside me was happy. Sadly the same isn't true with Ep8 and I'm truly gutted about that. Visually I think it's stunning, absolutely gorgeous, but the biggest problem for me is the story itself really feels woeful at best, full of stupid decisions to advance a plot which is already stupid, wasteful with it's characters and containing some very blatant "Right On" Hollywood messages through-out when talking about the Empire which were far too noticeable.

In balance however there were some good scenes, although rare, in the film with several scenes in particular that were very enjoyable to watch.

Despite that, unlike Ep7 or Rogue One I don't think I'll be going back to cinema to see it again :(

Hard Eight

Paul Thomas Anderson's first feature. it was great.

I've previously watched Magnolia and Boogie Nights, never felt like going back to Magnolia, and found BN a bit tedious when trying to watch a second time, despite enjoying the first go, but might have another stab at both after watching this one.
