What film did you watch last night?

Watched Dunkirk (second viewing on BR - first was on an imax screen)

Crossover timelines make more sense on second viewing

Its an excellently made film and the spitfire parts are amazing, I really love the steps Nolan made to make it as authentic as possible (like filming the pilots in actual flying aircraft etc) but also the absense of CGI makes it even more impressive

Its the best film I saw in 2017

I guess it does lose a little of the intensity on a TV instead of a massive cinema screen, and couldnt have the volume up as much as id like because of the sound mix being set to "terrify" and didnt want to give the neighbours PTSD :D

Beyond Skyline - Didn't even finish it. Not sure what possessed me to think it would be worth a watch but beyond terrible doesn't even come close.

Watched Jurassic World at Christmas as it was on TV. I was rather bored and didn't really care for any of the empty characters. It was predictable, silly and presumably just got made because it had been enough time to sell another one.

Dinosaurs are cool though and Bryce Dallas Howard is hot, so i give the film a 4/10.

Blade runner 2049

Well well well. They say that imitation is the most sincerest form of flattery and boy does 2049 deliver that in spades to its progenitor Blade runner.

Very very good film. Flawless visuals and v good sound design as well. Hints of vangelis esq but no more than that Cast all very good even that dotard Ford.

However.....this is a beautiful film that to me can't or moreover doesn't want to get out of it's father's shadow (Bladerunner)

The curse of sequelitis? But then this didn't feel like a sequel to me more a reimagining of the story except set further on in the timeline. The problem is Bladerunner has already done this. It asked all the questions already so 2049 feels like a retread in its footsteps.

A very goodhomage to Bladerunner (9/10)

BR 2049 8.2/10

Edit. I have a feeling rewatches of this might pull the score down though.

Justice League. 6.1/10

Not too bad. Watchable. But only just....I'll watch any superhero crap tho (I thought Spawn was ace!)
Minus points for very bad CGI superman effects...and they were sooo bad.

Anyone else recognis/hear Mr Danny elfmans Batman motif in some of the Batman scenes?

Geostorm.

It’s absurd, it’s like The Day After Tomorrow crosses with a lame and predictable twist. Strangely I was not bored and got on with the ride and watched it all. But I feel like this film came out like 10 years too late, everything from plot to special effects already look dated. Terrible film, enjoyable movie.

Cape Fear 6.5/10
I've not seen a real Crime film/Thriller in some time but this was a Great movie kept me interested, the best I've seen Robert De Niro not phoned in like his newer movies, after watching this im wanting to watch more of his older movies any suggestion.

Down side I did not really have anyone to cheer for in basic A choice of a liar sorry I mean lawyer or a psycho criminal.

The Green Mile

17 years late, with high expectations, and I must say, expectation very happily met!
Fantastic movie, not at all what I was expecting, a brilliant mix of humour and sadness, as well as some great depictions of proper horrible people.
I won't lie, I did tear a bit at that scene.

9/10

Jumanji (Welcome to the Jungle) 7/10

Low expectations because I wasnt a massive fan of the original, and I really enjoyed it.

A completely different take on the whole concept with an incredibly fit female in the cast to boot.

WINNER!

Was Mrs choice of film last night she choose tomorrow land. Meh 4/10 what was the point? Spent ages getting there, the droids were just daft with the stupid constant smile. Won't be rewatching at any point

The Last Jedi

Whereas TFA was essentially a reworking of the original film, this took many of the features of the earlier films and used them to create something new, interesting, and deeply brilliant. It is a match for the very best of the franchise.

10/10

Airplane!
10/10
I've seen this so many times and it's one of thevery few films I'd consider gracing with such a high score. I simply can't imagine such a film being made now (too many **********).

I hand out 10/10 more generously than that. I don't think 10/10 needs to be reserved for perfection but rather one of the best and more enjoyable films I've seen recently. I've never seen the point of a grading system that doesn't hand out the top grade.

I have been ill in bed and watched 3 movies in the last 2 days.

John Wick Chapter 2 - pretty good. The film continues the previous films strong style ethic and background. Kind of mindless but enjoyable. I'm assuming their is an arc being introduced for an inevitable John Wick Chapter 3, this instalment was good enough I'll come back for thirds.

Laputa - Castle in the Sky - very good although US voice acting was a little jarring the quality of the story and visuals remains. I've started buying the Studio Ghibli films for my little uns but most of the PGs are too scary for them but that doesn't stop me watching. I do love the Japanese story telling in these movies so different from anything Western studios produce.

Nausica of the Valley of Wind - amazing one of the best films I've watched in ages. The story is a delight the voice acting is far superior to Laputa, the visuals are great. I would recommend this film wholeheartedly a beautifully told story.

Dunkirk. - 2.5/10

I was expecting some atmospheric historically correct window on the on the Dunkirk evacuations of 1940 with some drama to drive the story. In the same sort of vein as band of brothers, with a British twist.

Unfortunately is was dull as dishwater from start to finish, none of the characters were remotely engaging bar the skipper of the little boat. The sound track was dire and the narrative just poor. Only parts that held my interest were the Spitfire skirmishes and they weren't brilliant either. I wanted it to be sentimental and flag waving in the same way that The Battle of Britain, 1969 film was. You knew what the film was within 30 seconds of the soundtrack starting and actually cared if the cast survived!!!

I had this on my Christmas present wish list, luckily Santa did not deliver, as I have read quite a few negative reviews now, will get around to renting it instead at some point.
