What film did you watch last night?

At least Thor highlights the people with no sense of humour.

Thor 1 & 2 are crap.
.

Oh I have a sense of humour. Just the humour I find humorous isn't aimed at 12 year olds, which is what the movie was all about, every scene a joke and added comedic effect. Nothing like the comics. One cannot emotionally connect to absolutely anything, the death of Odin or Thor losing an eye or destruction of Mjolnir or extinction of Aasgard as we know it. The Movie is a perfect example of killing the plot with over use of humour. It was a parody of itself.

Thor 1 was good. 2nd was ok....

Early Man (2018) - 8/10

Harmless fun with plenty of one liners and humourous moments.

The style and animation is traditional Aardman, full of charm, character and all the little quirks in the detail you come to expect.

The comic characters are funny and enjoyable to watch, although the simple story could have had more to it than just the football element.

Total Recall (2012)

Why oh why was this film made. Knew it wasn't great & being seen fan of the original I had never bothered to watch it.
However as sky had it on uhd thought I'd give it a go.
I did something I hardly ever do with a film & turned it off off 45 mins

I'll be generous & give it 3/10

La La Land

8.5/10

Not usually much of a fan of musicals, but this is quite original. I felt that it was a film made better with a musical. It's stylish, vibrant and with a story that's simple yet charming. Tips of the hat to old musicals and 50s to 60s style.
Loved the music and the use of minor being melancholy yet hopeful.

Much respect to Ryan Gosling leaning jazz piano, the long single shots and Emma Stone being awesome as usual.

I think the claim was that it's not a remake, but is closer to Dick's short story.

Just some words used to appease fans of the 1990 that this wasn't to be a remake as it turns out, because it ended up being closer to that film than the source material.

They used characters from the 1990 film and a scene which is very similar, where Doug is told he's still dreaming and must take the pill to wake up. Plays out a bit differently, if you didn't get to that part, but it's clear it was a another element taken from the 1990 film that wasn't in Dick's short story. Not to mention the inclusion of the 3 breasted woman. :p

So much for being closer to the source material. ;)

The only thing that's closer to the source material, is that it's set solely on earth.

I'm reminded of the RoboCop remake, which was also completely pointless and like Total Recall 2012, was worse in every way. Poor Paul Verhoeven; 2 great films of his got **** remakes.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - 7/10
Not sure what to make of this. Some excellent acting from all involved, played a lot on stereotypes which I guess was the main moral of the story of not judging the book by the cover but it kind of loses it's way at the end as just as two of the main characters reach some sort of redemption, they then look to completely throw it away. It does pull you in all sorts of directions though emotionally.

After the argument, the daughter walks out saying "I hope I get raped" and the mother in anger says "I hope you get raped too"....and she happens to get raped? I know the film doesn't explicitly say that happened on the same day/night but that was the inference.

It was shocking to hear the mother say it, but what were the chances it would happen?
I was in an almost empty cinema, almost.. had someone bit special sat directly behind who burst out laughing at that, a right snorting laugh. ****ing idiot.

My take on it was it was definitely setting up the possibility of it being the last thing she had said to her daughter before she was killed

We went to the Local Flea Pit last night and watched The Darkest Hour what a great performance from Gary Oldman and the make-up was superb. Hopefully he should win the Oscar shortly and if he does he has earned it. The performance was ruined by people with their ton of popcorn and endless carton of gassy drinks it was rustle, rustle and more rustling and of course the slurping, it was coming from all sides and of course not forgetting the dozen young people who arrived late but also carrying on throughout. We have been going to the cinema for a long time and this was one of the worst nights we have ever had and a few times we were going to walk out but we stayed and as I said what a brilliant film and cannot wait to get the BD or 4k disc and see it in the quiet of my home. This may have actually stopped us from going in the future.
I haven't been to cinema since 2000. Too many idiots.....keeping well clear:p

The Florida Project

I came out loving it. Come 12 last night I was still awake thinking about it. I woke up this morning and decided it's probably the best movie of last year.

An immensely grounded story about a group of people on the poverty line having to live in a set of holiday motels in Greater Orlando, just a stones throw away from the Disney Resort.

A truly beautiful movie about the innocent curiosity and mischievousness of childhood, as well as the stinging reality of life so close to the bread line. The last 10 minutes are a thing of true filmic beauty. I had tears pouring down my face.

Cannot recommend you see it more.

Downsizing (2018) - 4/10

An interesting and thought provoking story that wasn’t at all what I was expecting.

There’s very little comedy as it focuses on the downsides of the procedure and its impact on the world, and it ends up more an ecological and political drama which has some astute observations, but tonally is negative throughout.

The acting is good with some memorable characters and scenes, but it is too long winded and depressing to be enjoyable.
