What film did you watch last night?

Drive 7/10

Enjoyed Baby Driver a lot so figured this would be more of the same. It's a great movie and quality wise I'd say they're similar but Baby Driver was a lot more entertaining to me. In fact I remember coming out of the cinema after watching it and spending a good 2 hours obsessing over how enjoyable it was with one of my friends. It's nothing special but it's extremely fun to watch.

Thor: Ragnarok 7/10

Starts off in as an almost self parody and kind of continues in that vein... Then Jeff Goldblum appears on the screen and completely steals the show!
For what it is it's pretty good.. you know what your going to get with these films and it delivered exactly as expected.
Cate Blanchett was as ever a dissapointment but her aside it was good dumb fun.

Do you mean Drive?

I'd argue that Baby Driver rode on it's coattails. Drive had the better intro (can't get enough of the title credits song to this day) which Baby Driver tried to one-up. It didn't for me but I can see how it would for others.

From there both movies had a lot to live up to, and Baby Driver didn't continue the pace of it's intro well. A couple of scenes matched the high-octane start, but the style of character development didn't make me care enough. The kid was supposed to be an anti-hero but was just too rosy.

Drive on the other hand, kept the same intrigue and suspense going from the start and rarely wavered from that pace. It had you question the integrity of the hero many times which is the perfect basis for an anti-hero.

Baby Driver was too sugary and Drive slightly too edgy, but the edge was more called for here. Plus Kevin Spacey killed it for me. Wrong character for him, and he didn't act it well at all.

Star Wars the last Jedi - 5/10
I thought the last Jedi wasted a lot of what was good and was built up in force awakens, A few things smoke ( blink and you miss him), Phasma fight could have been much better, luke really does nothing and seam like a different charector from the past movies, I was expecting something good for Carrie fisher, it just a filler If i waited 2 years to see this and watched it in the cinema like most fans i would have been annoyed.

Rian Johnson was a poor choice, its as if he could care less of whats been dome in past movies and slapped together what he wanted, if he wanted to do that he should have just made star wars side movie like rouge one.

I hope 3 is much better and Disney gets some one else to make it.

Annihilation - but weird, but entertaining enough, full of stupid decisions by the characters but then strange things were happening. It looked good and I liked the premise, it really reminded me of the STALKER games and the film, not read that book though. 3/5

If their aim was to get to the lighthouse, why on earth did they not go by boat?

Watched Thor, 6/10 it’s maybe the weakest MCU movie but still solidly enjoyable well made looks good and puts the DC movies in its shade.

So Thor is like 1000 years old, why couldn’t the plot have him banished for a decent amount of time like 100 years, no he learns a new philosophy in 2 or 3 days. I’ve been on longer stag do’s. Imagine if he’d tried to lift that hammer everyday for 50 years and failed imagine if he’d watch Jane grow up in the town he lived and then had to sacrifice himself. There would have been a greater sense of the depth of his failure and learning.

Free Fire (2016)

Can't give a true rating of the movie as I gave up after about 45mins, it seemed to be going nowhere, surprised I managed 45minutes to be honest, from what I watched....lots of people shooting at each other, that was it, I think the movie was trying to be funny but it failed hugely. Based on what I watched I would give it a 1/10, It's very rare I give up on movies but this was just trash.

Geralds Game (2017) - 7/10

Went into this one fairly blind, never having read the book. Found it to be very enjoyable aside from "that scene" although as with a lot of King adaptations the ending is often a gut punch

I've watched a few films purely on the recommendation of this thread, things that I would never have otherwise considered. Last night I watched I, Tonya, something I had seen advertised but being about figure skating thought I had zero interest in. However, after the glowing comments in this topic I figured that I'd give it a go. Glad I did, because it was really interesting, well acted, and close to being a black comedy despite it's true story roots. Would recommend it to anyone!

Fantastic Four (2015) - 3/10
Terrible. Somehow manages to take forever to build up but without any character development and then when it does get somewhere it ends with a whimper.

Agreed. Nothing happens. They obviously expected a success and for there to be more films so this was just a “set up” movie. Problem is they forgot each film should be self contained and have a useful beginning, middle and end.

If you look at the story of how the film was made, you will understand why it was a disaster. In short, it was originally supposed to be Chronicle 2, and the director was forced to rejig it to be Fantastic Four so that the studio would not lose it's Marvel licence for the FF characters. Also several very big scenes that would have made the story make more sense and the film better were cut by the studio to save money. The director was ****** and took it out on the actors.

Mary Magdalene (2018) - 4/10

A down to earth presentation of the story of the last days of Jesus Christ, but with more focus on Mary Magdalene and her role.

Good scenery, acting, and use of music, but boring to watch due to its slow pace and relatively undramatic sequence of events.

Justice League - There must be something wrong with me because I actually quite enjoyed it, and the grittiness that it offers in comparison with some of the Marvel films. In fact, I even like some of the characters more because of the films than I did previously (was never very fond of Superman and I actually found myself rooting for him...). The only one of the DC films I found to be a real dud was Suicide Squad.
