What film did you watch last night?

:D Of course! Didn't you know Avatar is also a chick flick!

Fatuous reasoning aside, if you go to IMDb and check the genre given for Star Wars you will see;
and for Pulp Fiction;
No mention of 'Romance' in the genre classification as in the case of Remember Me (2010) so no, don't be silly, they can't be misconstrued even sarcastically as chick flicks just because there is a kiss or love interest thrown in there.

In fairness its not a real genre, so you can claim anything to be a chick flick if you so wish.

No, one can not claim anything to be a chick flick! If you read the Wiki definition I linked above then you will see that is quite a nonsensical statement.

Chicks Flicks generally:
  • appeal more to a younger female audience
  • have themes that are relationship-based, mainly romance but not always.
...They generally tend to appeal more to a younger female audience and deals mainly with love and romance. Although many types of films may be directed towards a female audience, the term "chick flick" is typically used only in reference to films that contain personal drama and emotion or themes that are relationship-based (although not necessarily romantic, as films may focus on parent-child or friend relationships). Chick flicks often are released en masse around Valentine's Day

'Chick Flicks' could be considered films like:

Always Be My Maybe (2019)
How to Be Single (2016)
Bridesmaids (2011)
She’s The Man (2006)
et al.

So, anybody trying to call 'Star Wars' and 'Pulp Fiction' a chick flick is being disingenuous at best.

Three billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri

An absolute masterpiece from the guy behind In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths. I don't think I've ever watched a film that turned from laugh-out-loud funny to utterly bleak so quickly or so often. Part black comedy, part crime drama, it tells the story of a collection of damaged people in small town America dealing with the fallout from a hideous crime. The writing, timing, acting, and filmography are just absolutely on point throughout. If you're looking for something genuinely different and thought provoking, you need to watch this film.

A must watch 10/10.

My favourite film of the year and an absolute masterpiece. Like you say you can laugh and then cry in the same scene and some of the turns just punched you in the gut with it's emotional body blow.

there's enough ambiguity there that i will continue to consider Debbie does Dallas a chick flick. And Pulp Fiction, cause i think there's quite a bit of love and romance in that too, especially between the gimp and Marsellus. :p:D

First line of the Wiki. Chick flick is a slang term.

Definition of slang "a type of language consisting of words and phrases that are regarded as very informal"

So pretty much by the information you're using, it's a very informal (or not real) genre.

And now you're making up your own argument (straw man) because I never once said it was a 'genre'. I'll leave you to argue with yourself....

you didn't, but come on dude, it was kinda implied that chick flick was being talked about as a genre of sorts.

A 'chick flick' just has to involve 'Love & Romance'
that's the claim you made that has led to this bit of leg pulling and some jokes about pulp fiction et al also being chick flicks.

Watched the Conjuring 3 last night. 6/10. More like an occult detective story, loosely based on a real event the Warrens were involved with, then a load of fictional elements bolted on to spice the story up.

Same as the second movie, the enfield poltergiest they were there a matter of a few hours but conjuring 2 makes out like they were there a few days, then the whole crooked man thing etc all added in.

Conjuring 3 imo was the weakest movie of the 3 main movies so far.

This screams of 'why does these even have a sequel'

Because if they can make a movie for around 10 million and have it rake in almost 160 million, you bet your ass theyre gonna scrape together a sequel.

Why do you think theres so many Halloween movies? Because they're cheap to make and pretty much always return a few times their budget.

You used a wiki as your reference which says so on the first line. As above, I was joking before you started getting very serious about it.

Some chick flicks:

The Birds
The Crow
Black Swan
The Wild Geese
Howard the Duck
The Pelican Brief

And of course:

Chicken Run

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5027774/

I began watching this a while back but switched it off quite soon afterwards. I guess it wasn't what I was looking for at the time.

Anyway, I'm quite glad I saw it through as it was quite compelling viewing and also had its somewhat amusing moments, e.g. the way language is used without coming across as especially aggressive.

Great cast. I've seen Frances McDormand in several movies now and she's been top-notch in all of them. I'm also a fan of Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell.

:) And that's about the best comment on the subject, which should probably die and get back to the actual thread title of 'What film did you watch last night?'.

Guest House Paradiso.

Only lasted 10 mins or so. Dreadful film. Not funny in the least bit, I had forgotten that they were both not very funny. Their best stuff being The Young Ones.

Triangle on someone else's recommendation within this thread and enjoyed that somewhat. I could not help feeling they could have done more with it.

Kate. Solid 7/10.

I was worried they would cop out at the end, as happened with the Dennis Quaid version of DOA, but they didn't.
