What film did you watch last night?

Wrong Turn 2021 - 7.5/10

I've never seen the original (or the billion sequels) but this was better than I expected, it steps out of the standard slasher fare in the woods I was expecting.

I actually quite like the mid-point subversion, however guess it's more effective on folks who have seen the original movies or general horror fans. The first of the series from 2003 is a great horror movie, sequels not so much, the reboot totally switches up the formula.

It's actually written by the same guy who did the original, cue the throwaway joke later on:

Safe in suburban civilization again, one of few surviving characters mentions that an upcoming family movie night will feature a film about "inbred cannibals," to which Modine's character deadpans "Again? Jeez."

Spiderman får from home? 8/10

Finally got around to seeing this.
I'm not a super fan of Spiderman and I've not seen the previous films except on TV and other snipets. So I had a very basic knowledge of what happens in the film.

I suspect any real fans will love this, it was well done for the most part and as ever majorly helps set up the next marvel product.

One I'm actually looking forward to.

Ahhh, excellent. Turned on my tv late last night to find the original The Thing, showing on the classics movie channel. As you can tell from my sig , I love The Thing movies. All of them, love all 3. Seen them all many times.

So I will give the original The Thing a heavily biased 10/10, even after over 70 years :D

Wrong, there is only one The Thing movie ;)

:)

Its amazing how ahead of its time the book that the films are based on was. To think the original story was written before World War 2, the author was definitely writing from a mindspace way ahead of his time. Its also interesting that the characters and storyline in the 2nd The Thing movie (the Kurt Russell one) are more faithful to the original book version than in the first The Thing movie (the 1951 one)

But regardless, I love them all. Without doubt my favourite films of all time :D

I don't have the best memories of the 50's one tbh - might be something to revisit on a lazy Sunday afternoon. I have a lot of frustration with the most recent prequel as when I see the early practical effects work they ditched, it's so much better looking than the CGI mess we ended up with.

Yeah the CGI wasnt as good as the practical effects, which still hold up well even today 40 years after its release, but even so I like the prequel and the way it all ties in so nicely with the Norwegian base and its layout being identical to the layout you see in the 1982 film when they go to the Norwegian base and I love the way that it seamlessly connects with its final scenes being the opening scenes from the John Carpenter movie.

Ah no, I mean the practical effects in the 2011 version, they spent months working on them, there are videos online showing them and they look fantastic. Then a decision was made during production to switch over to CGI. I think the 2011 movie would have been far better received if they'd stayed with the practical stuff.

EDIT: I think if you search Thing & Amalgamated Dynamics, it should show the work.

Wrong Turn (original) - 6/10

I thought I'd see what the original was like, it's very generic 90's slasher really. I almost turned it off in the first 30 mins but it actually did get better over time but nothing special. I have no idea how it spawned so many direct to video sequels, I guess they must have made money. Was nice seeing Dushku again being a big Buffy/Dollhouse fan :D

You need to see the next one with Henry Rollins now - come on, do it now you've started down the dark path ;)

Solo - 7/10 (all of the films have been this for me so far!) I don't know if it was because I was expecting it to be rubbish after all I had heard but we both rather enjoyed this one. Quite light hearted after Revenge of the Sith and had a few funny moments. One moment towards the end left me rather confused about a certain villain making a little brief appearance because I don't remember seeing him in any of the other films but I suppose that'll make sense soon enough.

Rogue One. - 8/10. By far my favourite Star Wars film to date. I haven't actually seen it since going to the cinema to see it but it was just as good as I remembered it being. I liked that they all died rather than escaping and living happily ever after. Decent action scenes and always felt like the stakes were high once the Death Star revealed its party trick. I could say 9/10 for the last scene alone.

I liked Solo too, not really sure what the winging was about on that one
- that villains story was continued in the Clone Wars and Rebels animated series
R1 - agree! really decent stuff

Ahh, are they worth watching? I'm not a Star Wars super-fan so it doesn't entirely matter to me but just curious as the last time I saw them, they were free falling.

This going to be my first proper time watching the original trilogy. It's going to be weird watching a group of films almost 50 years old after all the recent CGI trickery but I'm quite looking forward to it and seeing if it holds up as the best group as most fans of the franchise say.
I must admit, I'm getting into it much more than I thought I would. Nice amount of world building going on and it's making a lot of sense. I'm not super excited to watch the most recent 3 as I watched them in the cinema but I'll go through with it all

I'm a big star wars fan but gave up after a few seasons of the clone wars, just didn't grab me at all. Wasn't keen on the animation style which didn't help tbh.

Rogue One definitely the best of the Disney ones - Solo isn't as bad as a lot of people would have you believe. Surely you remember the villain at the end from The Phantom Menace @Junglist ?

Which one :p Do you mean the very final scene where both villains, while not yet revealed, were in the room with Mace Windu and Yoda? Or the villain who died a few scenes earlier when he fell down a giant shaft? I mean they're old films at this point and I suppose most have seen them I just don't want to risk spoiling it for the 4 other people on earth who haven't seen it!

I know who the villain at the end of Solo in the hologram was, I just assumed he was no more.

Make that 5 ;)

Maybe i've misunderstood which villain you were referring to in Solo? Who did you mean when you said "One moment towards the end left me rather confused about a certain villain making a little brief appearance because I don't remember seeing him in any of the other films"

Feel free to spoiler tag it :D
