What film did you watch last night?

Finally got round to watching...

The Matrix Resurrection - 6/10

Thought it rather bland, TBH. First half hour not much really happened other than trying to figure out how Neo/Thomas back in the office creating a game based on the previous three movies.
After that very much by the numbers and afraid to say neither of the actors chosen to play Morpheus and Smith had the screen presence of Lawrence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving, who presumably wanted nothing to do with the sequel. The mad Frenchman largely wasted.
Lines between the real world and the fantasy one much less distinct and the "cute" machines almost playing with dragging in a much younger audience.
Whole thing seemed padded out by at least 20 minutes with the climax in particular going on and on and
could see the tank switch coming miles away.
Not sure if this was standalone or further movies intended but perhaps one franchise that should have been left as it was.

Tenet: 6/10

First time I've actually sat through the whole film without interruption. It'll require another watch and will then probably grow on me.

Shutter Island.

First time I've seen it.

Am I the only one that didn't like this? Sets the scene well, then gets weird, nearly binned it off half way through (wish I had), what was the big finish, oh he was crazy. Would have been 3/10 if it had been an hour and a half movie, not over 2 hours.

Damn I love this film. Especially when it clicks what he means at the end.

Mad Max (1979)

Somehow managed to get this far without ever seeing this before, although I have seen the others.

I quite like the rawness of the movie, doesn't give you any back story etc. No terrible CGI either.

6/10

Sunshine (2007)

3rd time I have seen this, this movie I can 100% understand if you didn't like it, its weird, the plot is thin and predictable, and scientifically completely absurd.

But I really like it, I find it quite artistic for lack of any better description, good acting, well directed in my opinion. Bordering on a horror movie really, which again, I dont normally like, I dont normally like weird, but it just clicks.

I absolutely love this movie, falls apart a little towards the end but it's beautifully shot, has a magnificent soundtrack and mostly great performances throughout.

In fact, I shall be rewatching this weekend.

Prey - I acutally enjoyed this, much better than the previous rubbish. 7/10

Liked that it was a lot more blood and guts in the kills.

Predator: Prey - 6/10 - Lets get this out the way "No it's not woke" and it's actually Good. The main cast make believable, rational decisions, the female lead is shown to fail, struggle, improve and triumph eventually in a relatively realistic way (her "magical returning" axe is her only very slight mary-sue issue). The story is decent, the cinematography is fantastic (love the locations), the effects (practical and CGI) are, for the most, fine but that leads me into my only real "This Is Bad" point - the new Predator in both practical and CGI looks bloody awful to me - I mean it's not far off comic-con cosplay levels of "I just bought this predator costume from a fancy dress shop" where you can see the foam body crease when the actor bends over and the actual "skin" looks like spray painted foam - zero life to it and miles away from the realism of the "skin" in Predator 1-2.

There's a few minor things dotted through-out which don't really detract from the overall enjoyment of the film and I'm 100% sure people looking specifically just for "woke" things will pick-out some of the "strong independent woman vs men" scenes but, for me, those both arrived and were handled in ways which made sense to both the characters and the overall story.

For me it sits in the franchise like this -

Predator (9/10) - Predator 2 (7/10) - Prey (6/10) - Predators (4/10) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Predator (1/10) ---------------------------------------------------------------AVP films (-25/10).

Abit like Alien franchise Predator franchise past first two movies got worse over the decades gone by until now.

Prey really good addition and up there with the original for me. Setting really suited it and much better than expected, good main lead and characters that don't all make dumbass choices which was refreshing

8/10

Bullet Train (2022) - 8/10

Entertaining fun with great action, great comedy and a great finale.

The collection of seemingly different hitman stories all come together into a traditional story of betrayal and revenge with different layers and different attitudes as the eastern and western styles combine.

There’s a great and varied cast of characters, good use of music and good use of the train setting, even if the portrayal of Japanese culture is a bit too stereotypical at times.

Documentary/Film on BBC iPlayer - Freddie Mercury: The Final Act.

I thought I had seen all of the documentaries about Queen but apparently, I hadn't.

Very good, plenty of input from other artists and quite emotional in places.

Prey 8/10

Thoroughly enjoyed that! The best since the first movie. I wasn't too sure about the predator design at first but it grew on me. His tech is so cool!!! Some great brutality and scenes. Top stuff.
