What film did you watch last night?

After watching Prey last week went back to the start and watched Predator.

It's hard not to watch it with rose tints in but my sons found the effects laughable, I had to remind them it is 35 years old!

As @BUDFORCE says Prey is pretty much the same film but I found them more enjoyable!

The 4k remastered on Disney looked amazing in places.

4/5
Good movie from Arnie

Everything Everywhere All At Once

It was pretty good although after a few creative ideas introduced at the beginning it didn't really build on it very much. Seemed like it was cashing in on Asian "quirkiness" that is popular these days. Also knocking it down for being another social commentary about LGBTQ issues. When it comes to mind warping films there are better out there like The Fountain, Cloud Atlas, Enter the Void etc.

6/10

The Sea Beast (2022) - 5/10

It starts off great as a rip-roaring sea faring adventure with a solid premise and over the top acrobatic action, but ends up spoiled by being too twee and childish with its moral agenda.

The animation is superb but the beasts are quite basic looking and don’t look menacing. The cute one does look cute and is quite funny, but the main beast is little more than a shape with eyes.

Great music, some good humour and a multi-cultural cast of albeit stereotypical characters means there’s still stuff to enjoy, but it gets too silly and didn’t live up to its initial impression.

The thing that most amused me about the film, and that I happened to spot quite quickly, was (and this may have been mentioned elsewhere), the husband was Short Round from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (was also in Goonies) :)

I thought i recognised him, but couldn't place him!!! I thought he was good in this.

I didn't find that out until after watching it and was also surprised by how little acting he has done since then.

Spiderhead (2022) - 4/10

A trendy and modern take on controlling personality and emotions through clinical drug experiments.

There are some interesting ideas with its experimental drug and prison concepts, but it doesn’t’ really do anything with them.

It’s more of a slow drama about the accidental criminals seeking redemption than a thriller; it doesn’t really get dark and there’s no surprises in its mediocre plot.

It’s watchable mainly thanks to the good acting from the leads, but the weird use of music and expensive setting leans towards a ‘style over substance’ opinion.

The Invitation (2022) - 3/10

It has an enjoyable build up thanks to the likeable leads, but it took far too long and after the big reveal, it was over all too quickly.

There wasn’t really any horror or mystery, just a few jump scares and glimpses of the monster, although the awkward social engagements might tap into modern horror.

The action packed finale was ridiculous and along with the lack of originality, completely spoiled the whole film.

The Lord performed his role admirably and the setting and costumes were good, but overall it was far too tame to really get your teeth into.

The Batman (2022) - 8/10

Its long and it has its flaws (the plot falls apart in the third act) but as a piece of world building it is excellent.
I do believe part of the discourse with this film is that its very character driven, rather than action focussed...and there's a lot to sit through for 3 hours.
There's enough here though to have faith that a sequel will up the ante significantly and Matt Reeves and all the cast have easily proven that they are the right people to deliver a new vision of batman films.

"Land of Mine" in German with subtitles. 8/10

Edit: Raising my score to 9.75/10. Can't stop thinking about this film, probably because the same issues face us now. Would I feel the same sympathy for Russian conscripts put in a similar position now? I hope so, but I'm not sure. War steals your humanity one hasty resentment at a time. Peace gives it back more slowly.

Film about de-mining in Denmark at the end of the war, using very young German POWs. Not a lot of action, and far from the most cheerful of rides, but very good character development. I made it to the end and didn't feel cheated. I don't finish many movies any more.

Edit: a search shows plenty of earlier postings about this. I agree with them all.

Yes I watched this a while back. Absolutely fantastic movie. I loved it.

Cliffhanger - 7/10

Classic. Needs no words.

Fall (2022) - 7/10.

2 women stuck on 2000ft tall radio tower. Film was in 16:10 aspect ratio. As someone with vertigo it's good and bad to watch! Good story, very unique. Impressive special effects considering its probably very low budget.

Doomsday (2008) - 6/10

A very British apocalypse movie reminiscent of Mad Max. It’s serious, gritty, bloody and gory but also with a goofiness to it. The plot is mostly bland and traditional but takes a few entertaining turns and ends up being extremely silly and overall, good fun. The no-nonsense lead actor is a bit flat and the supporting cast are nothing remarkable, but the fast paced brutal and explosive action throughout the different settings
(zombie outbreak, dystopian punk cannibals, medieval time travel)
make it stand out.
