What film did you watch last night?

Kung Fu Hustle (2004) - 7/10

A silly and goofy martial arts movie with an utterly bizarre sense of humour.

The film’s style is like a musical but with the song and dance numbers replaced with over the top slapstick fight scenes and cartoony special effects.

The plot and characters are weird and somewhat nonsensical, but it’s very funny and entertaining nonetheless.

If you enjoyed that have you seen Shaolin Soccer, same director and style and equally as funny.

I was expecting this to be trash because I had never heard of this actress before
Erm, she won an Oscar you know. For a film called Room which is well worth a watch. (And will utterly break anyone with blood running through their veins!)
Eastern Promises 8/10

Awesome film. Viggo is great.
One of those great movies I’ve only ever seen once but has stuck with me. Brilliant.

We watched Everything Everywhere All at Once. Well, I say “we” but after having to give the usual marketing spiel (“What’s it about”. “Do you want to watch a trailer?” “No” “Kermode loved it” “Oh but reviews don’t mean anything” etc. for twenty minutes :o my other half promptly fell asleep..

Anyhoo, I really liked it. Shame I missed it on the big screen. It didn’t feel long at all, lots of action, good fight scenes, elements of the Matrix there. Good humour. Would recommend 7/10.

Yeah, I found that out later. I'm not a massive movie buff so haven't a clue who half the Hollywood actors are these days. My gut feeling was she was just another one of these not-very-good Disney stars who got lucky. :D Way off the mark.

Ticket to Paradise (2022) - 6/10

If you're going to produce a run of the mill romantic comedy/drama film then you may as well set it in one of the most beautiful places on earth and get some of the biggest names in Hollywood to lead it.

The location and scenery was stunning, the acting performances were good and although the story itself was by the numbers, it was enjoyable light hearted entertainment with a light moral message.

It did run for a bit too long and the outtakes were by far the funniest part of the film.

Three thousand years of longing

From the trailer alone it is not the kind of movie I think I would normally watch, seemed too much fantasy, but, this is one of those trailer and movie combos that flips your expectations on its ear.

Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton play their roles really nicely and the movie is about storytelling and drama.

The 70% rating it has seems fair for the masses, slow in parts, but visually stunning and the cinematics for audio are superb as well. Watch it on an OLED screen for the best effect as this has plenty of scenes where darkness and colour play a core role in the story telling.

Personally I'd give it an 80% for doing something different, and presenting is in a really nice way.

Just saw this too and really enjoyed it. it did seem to peter out a little towards the end and her visions of the initial Djinn's were never really explained, but it was a great tale. I would have liked to have seen someone like Terry Gilliam take it on , if he's still taking anything on! The trailer does mis-sell it a little.

Don't Worry Darling (2022) - 7/10

A film about idealism and control which tries to fit too much in and as such, comes across as a bit of a mish-mash.

The story and the big reveal was good but overall, not that spectacular – thematically it covers well-trodden ground, but the presentation was excellent, teasing out the mystery and being unsettling through all the little oddities.

Pugh’s performance was outstanding, captivating in every scene she was in and the idyllic setting looked the part, complimented by the music of the era.

I really enjoyed it, although it was a bit too weird at times.

The Batman 8/10 loved it It was great to see a detective Batman not just the vigelante. The main conclusion set piece was maybe the only thing that let it down a little not quite meeting my expectations. Theere are some off things in how I expect the Batman to be but otherwise really really good. The story was probably the best part, a proper mystery thriller. The actors were all good and it looked fairly sharp. I'd watch a sequel if they made one.

The story was the worst part! The sets, the mood, Batman (aside from Emo B Wayne) all looked great - but there was no story.

Everything would have gone down exactly the same had Batman not even been in the movie.
