What film did you watch last night?

I don't know why but I have never got round to watching It's a wonderful life. Such a fantastic film but also just as sad that a film getting on to 80 years old is just as relevant today as it was then.

The sequence with Clarence where he was never born is pretty much how our society has turned into today.

The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring 10/10

The Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers 7.5/10

The first film is impossibly good. Amazing world building and magical... then tense and dread-filled. The series never reaches those highs again - perhaps because it divides into subplots - but remains very watchable.

Two things stand out with it being 20 year old:

(1) The special effects are still generally excellent. For whatever reason, the first film seems to be the best in that regard.

(2) Huh... it kind of is super 'un-diverse' with its cast by modern standards. I say that despite sometimes finding a cast that's 'over-engineered' towards diversity a little tiring, but I guess that's happening now because, looking back, it really was not diverse at all. Maybe in a few years the best balance will be found.

I have never understood the hype for any of them.

Just not my cup of tea I guess but I hated the book as well so that probably influenced my feelings towards the films.

Goodfellas is on the BBC tonight so already very excited for it!

Yeah, true for the three books as well? I do like the battle scenes in TTT but still no 10/10.

I'm not a bookworm, so can't speak for the books - never made it past the second instalment. They are actually quite a hard read.

I think it comes from having an 'epic' story well executed, that's both charming and intense.

I'd give the first film another whirl. Goodfellas is one of my favourite films, so there's hope for you yet :D

As a teenager, I loved the books, but I find the films a bit of a chore to watch these days.

Good/great in places but other bits/character development which irks me, such as the 'more' child-friendly elements.

Lol! Cheeky!!

Goodfellas is brilliant so at least we can agree on that ;)

The Mrs wanted us to watch Twilight. Got to New Moon part 1 and her sciatica came on... I think they are alright but I am quite open to what I watch.

Followed up with Return of the King 8/10

Plenty to like here. The battle scenes are great, particularly the oliphants section which is exciting like the AT-ATs in Empire Strikes Back… Gimli’s line when Legolas downs one is super :D

But it’s the agony of watching Frodo and Sam soldier through that keeps it tense. Those feels when Gollum is turning Frodo against Sam :(

I also never twigged that Sauroman isn’t in the theatrical cut - he only shows up in the extended version.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio (2022) - 8/10

A delightfully inventive yet darker fantastical take on the story which isn’t without its charm and humour.

The characters are great - Pinocchio is heartwarming and full of energy, childhood curiosity and innocent mischief, which also makes him quite annoying at times, Geppetto shows real grief and patience only a parent can have for their children and Cricket is very effective as both the long suffering narrator and as comic relief.

The stop motion animation is superb, the voice acting is good and the songs are entertaining, if a bit on the short side.

The plot is two stories mixed together, which does drag a bit in the middle and the second story feels rushed and underdeveloped. The ending is a bit too silly but overall, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
