What film did you watch last night?

Project Wolf Hunting on Prime.

Korean horror about a ship of high security serial killers, psychopaths and murderers being taken to, funnily enough, Busan (a lot seems to happen in Busan !) , escorted by a bunch of cops. The killers break free, go on a rampage , blood spraying all over the place but this is a Korean film and it wouldnt be a Korean film without zombies, sort of, and guess what just happens to be in the cargo hold, cue cops v serial killers v zombie, sort of, mayhem :)

For plot 2/10, for seriously OTT blood and kills 9/10

Did you watch the IIRC "international cut"? I got the BD of that a while back and the "international" version with the extra scenes (mainly at the start) meant it made a lot more sense and improved it a lot over the version I'd seen before.
Watched it on Amazon (freevee with ads) , think it was the longer cut but has been a few decades since i last saw it :).

Decided to be the tester for ‘horror club’ in relation to a recent release in cinemas…

Talk to Me

The premises is a bunch of teens who are in possession of a weird hand that allows you connect to spirits, which they use as an edgy party game.

It sometimes hits and it sometimes misses. The Aussie setting is fresh, the acting and characters are generally good (feels like a bunch of friends) and the execution of the ‘violent scenes’ is generally very good - I was definitely wincing at times, ouch! There isn’t much mystery but the film does make some room for the audience to guess what is going on at points, which is really welcome.

The biggest flaw, and unfortunately it’s a material one, is that it’s a film where bad things happen because people make silly decisions, or allow silly things to happen. Just… ffs, don’t do that!! Never make the audience feel annoyed about characters that you are simultaneously trying to make them feel sympathy for.

Aside from that, the premise feels a little under-developed and not much beyond a classic Ouiji Board story. It’s not a bad retelling of that, but it IS that. So it’s merely a fresh entry in the ‘talk to the dead’ genre, but it’s not going to blow anyone’s mind. There are no themes that carry the film either, so it’s not notable in that sense like how that was at the forefront in ‘Get Out’

I’d say it’s watchable. Go in with low expectations for payoff / plot, but allow the horror to hit and its fair strengths should be observable.

5/10

Edit: If your the sort of person that takes enjoyment for what a film does well and are happy to overlook the lesser aspects (which let’s face it is pretty much necessary with most horror films :p) then you may rate it more highly. I want to rate it higher because I want more fresh horror at the cinema… but I have to be honest that this one isn’t going to be ant the top of any ‘modern classic’ lists.

They Cloned Tyrone (2023) - 5/10

A good conspiracy/mystery concept with an odd mix of themes that I found rather boring.

It starts off with lots of fast talking black street culture and the larger than life characters create a humorous style, but gets quite dark and chilling when you realise they are just cogs in a machine and can’t change their place in society or truly affect their future because of where and how they were born.

The trio are enjoyable to watch and the mystery is revealed at a good place, but it was too inconsistent in tone to truly enjoy. The ending was good if a little predictable.

The Flash (2023) - 5/10.

About as uninteresting as every other DC movie (and a lot of the post Endgame Marvel movies). Other than a few nice nods to other superheroes it's just a bit meh, and I'm really getting tired of every superhero movie being about the multiverse now.

The Banshees of Inisherin.

Great setting/cinematography and the performances were superb especially Barry Keoghan. Funny, sad and obviously a bit bizarre. Feels strange after actually enjoying watching it for what it was...it felt like it really didn't go anywhere.

The Godfather

Thought I'd give it another whirl as a few people on here were mentioning it, split over two viewing sessions.

Occasionally, I'll watch films with subtitles on; sometimes my attention lapses or my hearing temporarily fails, then I irritate my wife by rewinding to make sure I understood what was going on. It sounds silly, but it's worth giving subtitles a try even if you're not hard of hearing, because it can actually improve your enjoyment of a film when important info is exchanged in what is seemingly non-material dialogue. The Godfather is definitely one of those films, not because the plot is super complicated, but because it really helps cement the names of the wider pool of gangsters in your mind. I think Oppenheimer might similarly benefit from subtitles, to help your brain remember what everyone is called.

Subtitles also places more emphasis on the contents of throwaway chit-chat dialogue, which is more important to follow in a film like The Godfather than most other films. It only really became obvious to me on this viewing that the hit on Vito was specifically triggered by Sonny speaking out loud in the meeting that preceded it... rather than Vito merely not wanting to do the deal. Which is really obvious when you are paying attention but blink and you'll miss it.

The music can be a little comically overbearing and likewise it feels silly how quickly everything escalates to a kill to solve a problem... but getting over that it's an epic story showing Michael's transformation. With great performances and very memorable scenes. Everyone thinks of Marlon Brando but I find his strange cheeks a little distracting - Pacino is better in it I think.

9/10

Onto part 2.

Scream 6? 7? 6 or 7 out of 10
The latest one....

Damn these got really violent during the stabbing I've only seen 1 and 2 I don't think I was missing out too much :p
What a load of garbage but I was still shouting at the screen lol. Teen slasher jumpscare nonsense at its best.

The Godfather: Part 2

It’s broader in scope and there’s a few very memorable moments, but I just don’t find it as satisfying as the first film.

The ‘prequel’ material with DeNiro is great despite us knowing his outcome which is a real accomplishment. The Pacino sections are increasingly bleak, de-glamourising it all (which is obviously the point) and sapping all the coolness away in the process.

I don’t find Roth a very interesting villain and the Cuba sections are lacking, but my major gripe is that l find it tedious that we never really find out what Fredo did.

Again, would recommend watching with subtitles (to help with the ‘Johnny Ola’ bits). In one sitting would be too much, which is how I guess it loses many people.

7.5/10
