What film did you watch last night?

Knock at the Cabin .

Ok I’m goi g to give this a 7 out of 10 as it kept my attention not many films do these days . I had to do a double take but yes it was Ron Weesley that came a knocking on the door along with Drax .

Barbie (2023)

Not really sure what to make of it. You have the silly goofy stuff, then the somewhat-serious stuff, and a huge chasm in between them in terms of tone. It just felt a bit weird swinging between the two. The way it delivered its message(s) was a bit hamfisted too IMO. I'd probably give it like a 6.5, 7/10.

Children of Men (2006)

A re-watch as I'd only seen it way back when, when it was first released. Something about it stopped me from getting into it. I'm not entirely sure what it was. The lack of music maybe? The world building or lack of backstory left a little something to be desired too. Again probably a 7/10 for me.

Interesting take. I thought the world building was good. The news coverage of the death of the youngest person in the world explained a lot and there were plenty of details shown without needing exposition (e.g. people having pets as child substitutes). The government approach to immigrants/refugees does now seem a bit tame, but the movie was made before Brexit and 13 years of Tory rule.

On a technical note, some of the filming techniques used during Children of Men are entirely bespoke and were made specifically for the movie.

If you get a chance, take a look at the filming of the car scene, a whole rig was setup with an open roof and each actor is ducking down between camera moves between their moments of dialogue.

From a story point if view, agree with @Mr Badger.

Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead (2023) - 7/10

A quirky Japanese zombie movie with plenty of undead gore, heartfelt humour and a good moral message about choosing to live your life how you want instead of being a mindless drone.

The premise isn’t that different but the lead is infectiously upbeat and the quick pacing across a variety of settings keeps things interesting.

Enjoyable, gory and with good undead effects, although the ending is far too silly and drawn out.

Expend4bles - 4/10
Straight to DVD level now, not even Statham can save it, merely phoning in his performance. Rotten in pretty much every aspect, lacks big names, exotic locations (a lot of it looks like it was shot in re-purposed Dr Who sets), the dialogue is wooden, the bro banter is painful and forced, aspects of the plot are rediculuos (a cargo ship made to look like an aircraft carrier?!?).

The only positives I could take from it was the bridge fight scene between Statham and The Raid guy which was at least well done (the rest of the action scenes are run of the mill henchman standing getting shot) and Megan Fox's white top at the end (an entirely pointless character other than those two points). Joseph Scipio does a good impression of Antiono Banderas but is otherwise wasted, like pretty much everyone else and Tony Jaa at least injects a little bit of fun but briefly.

Guardians of the galaxy 3 , I gather that's the last we will see of that crew.

Enjoyed it, not quite as good as 1 & 2 but still highly entertaining and funny with some tears of sadness for good measure.

By far the best marvel film series.

Emmanuel Lubezki. Went on to do Gravity, Birdman and The Revenant. The other oner in Children of Men is epic.

EDIT: I just watched that with headphones on. The sound is absolutely incredible too. I also love the fact the blood spatter on the lens halfway through wasn't intentional. They finished the shot and the camera man was saying it was all no good, when they watched it back they realised it was absolutely perfeect.
