What film did you watch last night?

Hell or High Water (2016)

I vaguely remember watching bits of this before must have been drinking, but watched it in full what a great movie, a little understated, but I prefer that to some over the top rubbish. Best movie I've seen in a while.

8/10
Another Taylor Sheridan movie.
Obligatory mention that it's part of Sheridans Frontier trilogy along with Sicario and Wind River - although he only directed Wind River

Great interview with him here before he blew up off the back of Yellowstone and started writing everything :D

A Quiet Place (2018) - 7/10

A decent movie that needs to be played with a good sound system and no distractions in order to get the full experience and effect as sound is the main driver of the movie.

Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985)

Been bloody years since I seen this one, probably heading towards, if not 30 years, remember watching it in VHS when I was little over and over.

Not sure it is quite as good as I remember it. I actually only seen the first two within the last 5 years or so, which I think I prefer, particularly the first one which is a pretty decent movie.

5/10

Dark City https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118929/

This is one that I've tried watching in the past more than once,
and for whatever reason, I either couldn't get into it, or maybe I started watching it too late.

This time, I saw it the whole way through, and enjoyed it more than I imagined I would,
but regardless, I was determined to finally see this to completion.

Interesting to see Richard O'Brien in there, and Jennifer Connelly looked lovely.
Some pretty darn good effects, especially when you consider the age of the film.

Expend4bles (2023) - 2/10

Watchable but pretty much terrible in almost every respect. No charm, cheese or humour, flat delivery of most of the lines, weak acting and a predictable and tired plot an 80’s action B-movie would have rejected.

Some of the action scenes were good but the shift from a team of Special Ops to a single operative made it feel stale and like every other action movie and didn’t allow for any character development of the new team members or villains.

The CGI was very bad and made all the big events look cartoony, the camaraderie between the stars was painful to watch and how the film ended was unbelievably bad. Thankfully, it wasn’t too long.

Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) - 6/10

Watched this with the kids and it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be with some funny moments from Jim. Kids enjoyed it though.

Strays 6/10. Dumb and stupid, disengage brain. A good, funny movie.

Saint Maud. 9/10. Had it on a list of things to see but Mark Kermode's Telegraph signoff was "I remember seeing Rose Glass’s astonishing feature debut alone in a pokey screening room one cold Tuesday morning and stumbling out in a daze, able only to say the words: "**** me!". That sums it up.

Same! I have not seen Mad Max for years (30!)

It's not a film which I want to revisit. Like Hellraiser. Seen clips and still, not one for me, the scary sprogs in the desert.

The Mad Max universe weirded me out when I was ten (and still to this day), with the bad guys wearing S&M gear post fallout still throws me. :p

So, I stick to the first - a great thriller with decent cars. :D
