What film did you watch last night?

Think you are in the minority there
I had heard great things about it and don't get me wrong, I loved the first two!

It just went a bit off the rails and just became a bit daft - the various aliens looked like they had stepped right out of a kids cartoon!

The battle with Adam Warlock to kick things off was great but after that it just lost me!

I just think the MCU in general has lost all of its "grittyness" (if that's a word?l

The Creator (2023) - 7/10

A mixed film with old and new ideas which is enjoyable and entertaining to watch but also rather forgettable.

The setting is different yet familiar and the story is straightforwardly predictable but well told and with expected emotional heft.

The blend of robotic CGI with the actors is seamless, the acting is great and the mix of American and Asian language, culture and cast adds to the setting.

The futuristic setting looks great, but it’s nothing new and the topics it covers has been done before and more memorably.

Went to see it last night as well, and my feeling are the same. Amazing futuristic setting, good CGI and overall it was all good. It's just the story wasn't all the interesting I guess. Just lacks the WOW factor at least for me compared to some of the other sci-fi films.

7/10

I've been watching a bit of a mix recently.

Living (2022)
A solid film, really well shot and with a good cast, Bill Nighy is good as always, and Aimee Lou Wood is good as the temp he starts to talk to and opens up to about what is going on.
I really enjoyed it, quite a quiet and I guess "gentle" drama that just works.

Some like it hot (1959)
Possibly due to the age/setting and it being so old I didn't really find this as funny as it's always said to be, possibly in part because the idea of men dressing up as women isn't as innately funny a premise as this seemed to think.
Having said that I quite enjoyed it and can very much see where a lot of later films took ideas/scenes from it, and a good solid film, just not "the funniest film".

I have to be honest, I don't think Marilyn Monroe was actually a very good actress going by her performance in it, she looked nice but out of the cast she seemed the weakest member, but both Curtis and Lemmon were very good.

I've also been making use of my BFI player sub* and watching some horrors etc from the 60's and 70's, and have been watching some of Jean Rollins' films, which are very much of a style and formula that whilst it can be fun is more than a little repetitive when you watching several in the space of a month (lots of nudity, many of the same cast returning, same locations etc).

As it's now October I'm going to try and concentrate a bit on clearing up some of my blu-ray backlog of horror films, especially the various ones I've picked up in sales.

*Although it's a shame that as far as I can see it doesn't have an app, so it's relying on my computer connected to my TV (I'm thinking about a pi5 as a plex box and I guess that would also do the job for this).

The Creator (2023) - 7/10

Watched this Friday - a good 6.5/10 (5 being average). Yes there's a mashup of sci-fi and no big names but the no big names made it infinitely more watchable. A Solid film but not ground blowing with some emotions for once. Probably one of the better films in a long time at the cinema.

Onwards - a good 6/10 (again 5 being average). This reminded me of Troll Hunter. A decent animation but missing some if the original plot.

King Richard - a good 6.5/10 (5 being average). Mrs was watching this but I started watching it whilst doing things. A film above a lot of the Hollywood mess currently out there.

Over the last two weekends...Murder on the Orient Express & Death on the Nile.

Had dismissed both out of hand initially, just seemed like a big name vanity project for all involved and didn't appeal. My wifes choice however and I must say, I was pleasantly surprised with both movies, Brannagh is excellent in the Poirot role and carries the movies along at a nice pace and there is no real downtime.

I probably preferred the first, definitely a higher calibre of acting talent on show, some of the performances in Nile weren't great & the story much more predictable (called the culprit(s) early on) but still a decent film.

The Nun https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5814060/

Not bad at all, quite enjoyed it throughout. The appearance of the Nun/demon is quite effective!

Demian Bichir provides a good performance (as does everyone else), though I thought Frenchie had one or two cheesy lines.

Nice to see the inclusion of, IIRC, a small bit of footage from The Conjuring at the beginning/end.
And there we see Vera Farmiga, the older sister of one of the main cast, Taissa Farmiga (Sister Irene).

Aliens that look mysteriously exactly like humans crash-land on Earth, fight "dinosaurs", and this big asteroid is about to hit. It's stupid, the dinosaurs look good but behave stupidly, and it's basically a procession of clichés and tropes but it has a decent amount of heart, doesn't outstay its welcome, and is entertaining enough most of the time.

7/10 - nothing special.

Bloodsport

It's been a while since I watched it and I saw the 4k blu ray for a good price. It was for a reason - it's the German print. The good news is that except for the menus it's all in English!

1984 (1984)

What the actual ****? Maybe the giant mushroom I ate earlier has had an adverse effect on me.

I've seen some weird **** in my life, but nothing even close to that.

2/10
I quite enjoyed the film, though I found the book better. However, I did like the music, that was very good.

Hostiles - 6/10

Good actually. I do like a western. It was quite moving in places, nice story showing how the old ways of the west are becoming outdated. Christian Bale is good as ever. Rosamund Pike was decent as well, although her accent wobbled a bit. It looked great too.
