What film did you watch last night?

The Towering Inferno

I feel like this is one of those ‘nobody gives a **** about it anymore’ sort of films. I presume it was a huge deal at the time.

It’s a very ambitious disaster yarn with a pretty extensive runtime, extending into ‘epic’. The fire effects are very impressive, especially for its age, and the film doesn’t pull its punches with some very miserable deaths.

Worth a watch if you fancy a disaster flick and haven’t seen it.

7/10

Whiplash

I absolutely love this one. It sounds so benign on paper: a upcoming drummer wants to become a legend under the ‘guidance’ of a ‘formidable’ music teacher…

Super intense and gripping. I like films that provoke strong emotions and this is definitely one of them. This sort of rating I reserve for films that are ‘experiences’ rather than ‘merely great stories’…

10/10

(Does that make it ‘better’ in my eyes than The Shawshank Redemption that I have 9.5 a couple of days ago….? No, definitely not. It’s just that Whiplash resonates with me in a certain unique way - and I really admire anything that has that effect on me)

Finished watching the fireworks on tv and decided, foolishly, to flick through the channels to see what was on - Silence of the Lambs is starting at 12:35 - be rude not to watch just a bit, just to the first ad break……3hrs later I’m going to bed wondering why I didn’t just turn it off and stream it at a sensible hour.

But it’s just so bloody good.

Tomorrow will be fun :(

Edit: tomorrow my bum, today I mean!

Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning

Saw this in the cinema, but watched it again last night. Epic, silly nonsense that knows exactly what it's trying to do and pulls it off admirably.

Often forget he was 60 or close to it when making this film

The holdovers. Really didn't take to it, all the reviews made out it was movie of the year but not by a long way for me. We turned off after 30mins so I can't even mark it tbh.

I also didnt see what all the fuss was about. Watched it all, but was definitely a playing with phone while watching film.

The Whale

I was very underwhelmed with this.

I found Fraser’s character increasingly earnest to the point of irritation - his daughter was maddening and he seemed to put blind faith into her which actually resulted in his own salvation…? The aim of the film therefore being to show that salvation could be found in relationships rather than by religion or by chasing obsession (as per the heavy handed Moby Dick references).

But that fails for me because the daughter didn’t really show any behaviour that warranted his faith in her.

Was this supposed to be a study in ‘humans gunna human and be silly’?
