What film did you watch last night?

Wonka

I really realy liked it. Light hearted and charming with a great cast. It reminded me of films of the past that I grew up with.

Would certainly watch it again.

The Thin Red Line

I’d never seen this South Pacific WW2 film. It’s a bit of a strange one tbh. It’s really quite bleak and has many scenes of soldiers struggling with injuries, dying or just having a bad time. All of that speaks for itself, but there is a lot of ‘poetic narration’ from internal monologues. I presume was intended to sound profound, and really push the idea that war makes people explore their own emotions, but it was mostly a big a miss for me - I found it distracting.

A minor gripe is that the film is bookended by quasi-cameos from John Travolta and George Clooney, who have such ‘star presence’ that it’s also a bit jarring and distracting.

I enjoyed it but not one I’d rush to rewatch.

I saw this at the cinema and it's probably the film with the most walkouts I've ever seen! There weren't many of us left by the end :p Can't say I enjoyed it that much, bit boring and over heavy on the symbolism iirc.

The film with the second most walkouts was Dad Savage. Billed as Patrick Stewart playing a tulip farmer in Lincolnshire, it had all the old biddies out at the cinema....only to find out the film wasn't quite as they expected! :D

Straw Dogs (1971)

Dustin Hoffman plays an American who moves to England with his English wife to escape the more violent society in the USA.

Characters are a bit under developed and everybody's motives seem a bit weak against their extreme actions. But it's a reasonably good film for its time and my second Sam Peckinpah film I've sat and watched from beginning to end. From that I've noticed he does seem to like his slow motion shots.

6/10

Can You Ever Forgive Me (2018)

True story based on an out of work writer who forges letters from dead authors and playwrites. A solid film with Melissa McCarthy and Richard E Grant on top form, tragic and funny.

Yep - very handed with its shots of nature and locals at peace, it really took that beyond what was necessary.

Infinity Pool

Not sure if I just wasn't in the mood for this but it didn't resonate with me at all. Seemed like an interesting concept but the story just had no depth at all. Found myself waiting for the end for the last 20 mins or so.

Man on Fire - 7/10

I would have enjoyed this a great deal more if I wasn't close to spazzing out from the highly irritating transition effects on this film. Constant freeze frame shots and flashing transitions, which were probably 'cool' at the time are nothing but irritating today. Otherwise it was a good film.

Try Possessor, if you haven’t already. It’s a much better film of his. Infinity Pool just isn’t very good at all.
