What film did you watch last night?

Mr Monk's Last Case

I watched the TV series way back during my college years, completely addicted as it was top shelf detective drama and Monk's character was so likeable and different to the norm. It was great to see that for the movie, all of the same actors return to play the same characters, just older. They didn't try do change the style of the series, they didn't add any new things to jazzed it up for modern times, it's just as I remember Monk being, just time has moved on.

But just as expected, given how long it's been since the TV series ended to the movie coming out, the new" audience we have today just don't understand the character as evidenced by a number of user reviews which have as a result lowered the score on places like IMDB:

I'd give it an easy 9/10 - It perfectly recalls all of the quirks of every character from the TV series from the 2000s, it embodies a wider message that even the dead still have a lot to say and the value of life, and it's rather funny just as we remember Monk being back in the day.

Marvels.

Now im not on some marvel hate train like a lot are but this film is dire. What on earth were they thinking? Even the cats were stupid and i love cats.

I re-watched Spike Lee's 25th Hour (2002) with Edward Norton and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Hadn't seen that for nearly 20 years and it's still really good. 8/10

I also watched Punch, Drunk, Love (2002) for the first time. P.T Anderson film with Adam Sandler. Not sure why I was expecting great things - It was ok but there's not much to say about it. It's complete fantasy, and i've no idea what Emily Watsons character would have seen in 'Barry' to start with. 6.5/10

I watched this last year and expected great things, because of all the rave reviews. Or how it keeps cropping up on top film genre lists. Definitely didn't do it for me and I'd agree with your score, maybe even a 6/10

Netflix options getting worse and worse? Spent ages flicking though last night but couldn't find anything decent or hadn't watched already.
Any recommendations with those with Netflix that I might have missed?

Spencer confidential - 5/10

Average-ish Mark Wahlberg cop/detective turned wrong side of the law vigilante. Some funny moments, and despite not being a huge Wahlberg fan, he does a decent job with what he's given
Without Avery Brooks drawn out Spencerrrr it would not the same. About the only thing I remember from the TV show.

Goldeneye

Eh, it’s alright… actually sort of boring? Not as funny or exciting as you’d like to remember. There’s quite a heavy ‘sleeping cold war’ emphasis which feels weird now that we’re back around to Russia being the ‘bad guys’.

But let’s face it - the real problem is that the plot of the film is not close enough to the plot of the game. No Silo? No Frigate?!

Totally overshadowed - needs more RCP90s.

5.5/10

Red Rocket 8/10

Another A24 gem

I love small town America stories. This one follows a washed up porn actor returning to his hometown and shacking up with his wife that he's separated from. The lead is really good.

Red Rocket is well worth a watch!

Watched Iron Claw last night and The Passenger tonight, Iron Claw, i didn't really know much of this family's legacy, being a bit before my time (bar Rick Flair!...), it told a really good story of a family built on a backbone of toxic masculinity with a decent insight from both sides of the coin without pedaling a narrative and allowing you to come to your own conclusions, probably one of the better films i've watched in a while.
The Passenger, fast food restaurant worker goes postal, ok not quite that simple and theirs a lot more narrative to it than that, it does a good job of building the tension of the story until the climax of the closing scenes, and thats where it falls short (being critical), well worth the time!

Aftersun (BBC3) - ??? / ???

Honestly, I have no idea what I just watched. It bored the hell out of me.

I then looked up the wiki page to try to understand what I'd just watched.

Apparently this is one the highest rated films ever, with critics raving about it.

But nothing really happened. I'm clearly a dumbass who doesn't understand great films. Because it bored me and nothing happened in all the time I watched it (missed like the first 20 mins).

e: And the people reviewing it in this thread are giving it 9-10/10. Typical :p

Seen some hype about Crash and remember watching quite some time ago, so watched it last night. It is quite literally 90% sex scenes. And not what I remembered.

Decided whilst typing this to check on IMDB, and apparently there is another CRASH with sandra bullock, and that's the one I remember, not the Holly hunter one from 1996.

Funny thing is the dodgy film thing I had showed a trailer from the sandra bullock one, but played the other one, I kept on waiting for bullock to show up and was trying to figure out exactly how she was going fit into this humpfest.
