What film did you watch last night?

I just came back from Iron Claw. Only a single showing today… small screen, but pretty busy! That’s Saturday night I guess :)

I’d give it a 7.5/10

The good is very good, but it a long film and I was ready for it to conclude by the time it got there.

Also…

… towards the end there were a few slightly silly, almost ‘saccharine’ scenes that seemed almost out of place, notably the brothers meeting in the afterlife and the sons saying they’ll be the new brothers to their dad. Even the prolonged closing shot of them throwing the ball around as a new family. Those just didn’t vibe with me as scenes to close it out with, noting the already extended runtime.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse - 7½ / 10

I've never watched a cartoon Superhero movie (I don't think) but this is 8.4/10 on IMDb so I figured it must be pretty good. I was really enjoying it until it actually went to more like a comic book movie in the last 30 minutes or so. Up to then I was loving the animation style, the music was great, the story was simple but sufficient. I would still recommend it, but feel it let itself down a little nearer the end.

Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse (3D) - 7.5 / 10

I've been meaning to watch this for a while, so when looking for a movie to test the 3D on my Quest 3, it seemed a good opportunity. Fun movie, nicely written and animated.
Should I be worried I didn't remember this film AT ALL!? It was only when I went to log it on Trakt that I realised I'd seen it

I mean, it's great cause I can enjoy great films a second time , but... to not even go 'hmm, this is familiar...'

(At least my scoring is consistent!)

Is it (The Iron Claw) a film that could still appeal to someone that has no interest in wrestling?
I have zero interest in wrestling, it didnt matter at all, still a good movie. Just like the movie "whiplash" I had zero interest in Jazz drumming but that film was awesome too, Iron Claw not as good as whiplash but still well worth watching, quite a sad movie though.

In the weeks leading up to his suicide he confided in fellow wrestler, Bret Hart, that his brothers were calling him and his death was inevitable.

Although that wasn't mentioned in the film, it was in Bret Hart's autobiography. So maybe it was left out because it wasn't corroborated or edited out for time or legal reasons.

I just took it that was a daydream that Kevin had in the dining room as his brothers body lay on the table.

In real life Kevin wasn't there when Kerry shot himself, his dad actually found his body. According to Kevin his Dad wasn't really anything like how the film portrayed him either.

Children of Men

Not as good as I remembered. There are a couple of good scenes, but the acting is very poor and I couldn't get behind any of the characters.

It's portrayal of the future was pretty accurate though - better screen tech but everything else messed up.

5/10

Mission Impossible-Dead Reckoning, I was a fan of the original MI series when I watched it in the early 70’s, but the films don’t quite entertain in the same way. Maybe Tom Cruise ruins it for me, I’m not a fan. Plenty of action and a good pace to it all though.

Because it's got one of the most monotone actors going in Clive Owen.

Bad Times at the El Royale - 8.5/10

Somehow I've never heard of this despite being a Goddard fan. Friend notified me it existed the other night in a casual conversation about Madame Web (they have Dakota Johnson in common but thankfully little else) Really enjoyed it, fun thriller following a set of different characters and how their stories intersect at a little hotel. Great cast filled with big names and a story that keeps you grabbed until the end. Makes me wish Drew Goddard did more directing!
