What film did you watch last night?

Champions 6/10

It was kind of what I expected to be from the trailer, a not so great Mighty Ducks. Was nice seeing Kaitlin Olson in film. The plot itself was as by the numbers and predictable as it could be but it was a nice 'comfort' film as it were.

Because it's got one of the most monotone actors going in Clive Owen.
Everything he's in is the same. He stands out like a mobile phone in a period drama. It's like he's just out of place, no matter what film I see him in.

I guess it's hard to explain why, but that's the feeling I have whenever I see Clive Owen in anything. He shouldn't be there; he's the odd one out, he doesn't fit.

Does that make even a shred of sense?

Didnt think much of it at the start but got really good and quite a heart warming.

Had a look at reviews.. And a lot Of 1 star.. For anyone who's seen it you can imagine what was driving the 1 stars!

X - 5/10.

Continuing my A24 watch list, I was disappointed by this after watching the excellent Green Room last week. There’s no real tension or scares and the kills are weak. I’ll watch Pearl as I’ve read it is better, but not got high hopes!

Hitch 7/10 - just easy to watch with some decent moments and the films heart is in the right place.

Friends With Benefits 7/10 - I love the genuine chemistry between JT and Mila Kunis, and Woody Harrelson playing the funniest gay guy ever and so far apart from his 'usual roles' is something you really want to witness/appreciate
The main reason I adore this film, is the addressing of alzheimer's/dementia, that becomes apparent in the second half - sorry the spoiler tag wouldn't work, but I'd genuine recommend watching it and sticking with it for this alone, I really respect the writers/casting for this, it really hits home, I reckon it helped a lot of people/opened their eyes - and on that note, I think this formula works and we need more of this versus the usual depressive style... Watch it, trust me, the second half is worth it.

The Iron Claw - 7/10

Wow, as has been said, so much tragedy in the family. Shockingly they had to leave some of it out as it would have made the film too sad! Good movie, a little slow at times perhaps?

There's just so much tragedy in this family that a film just couldn't sustain it. I ultimately took it out because it seemed like it was the difference between the film getting made or not.

Conan the Barbarian (1982)

I was such a big Arnie fan back in the day, but even then the Conan films were the ones I'd watch the least of all VHS tapes I owned of his films.

I don't this has aged particularly well. There's just so little dialogue and the acting from the entire cast isn't good enough to keep you engaged when there's just their actions and reactions to a film score.

Knowing that the sequel was nowhere near as good and PG rated at that, I don't think I'll rewatch again ever.

For me, Arnie's film career starts with Terminator and Commando.

4/10

Should have watched Commando, that was on tv last night :D

Paycheck (2003)

The film that killed off John Woo's Hollywood career and earned Ben Affleck a golden raspberry, but I enjoyed it a lot. Its a light fun watch with good sci-fi elements. When I saw it at the cinema there were some drunk yobs in attendance so it was a better watch this time.

It's also a good example of what I think a 12A/PG13 certificate film should be compared to modern films where they try to be edgy and reach their quota of violence and curse words. Paycheck rises above that and doesn't need it.

8/10

Leave the World Behind - 7/10

This one seems to split the forum reviews down the middle, but I really enjoyed it. And as someone mentioned, the sound was fantastic, some of the best use of Atmos I've heard.

Barbarian - 7/10

Pretty good little film in the horror/mystery genre, well worth a watch if you're into this type of film.

A Boy and his Dog - 2/10

A what I presumed was a low budget sci fi film from 1975 (though imdb says budget was $400k - is that low for '75?) Set in a post apocalyptic world after WW4.

What made me chuckle was it was set in.....2024 :D

Starring a very young Don Johnson in this proto-Mad Max film, as he wanders the wilderness with his trusty sidekick, a telepathic dog, who is smarter than most of the remaining humans.
