What film did you watch last night?

Civil War - 7/10.

I enjoyed it, I can see why some may have felt misled by what kind of film it was going to be, but I liked the different perspective. Though I found Wagner Moura’s acting a little lacking in the aftermath of a certain death. Maybe it was just the direction of that particular bit, but thought it was a return to form on the whole for Alex Garland after Men and Annihilation.

Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare

Enjoyed it a lot. Some silliness, but that's to be expected with a Guy Richie film.

Main cast were great. Also made me wish that more people watched Man From U.N.C.L.E. Really needed a sequel.

The World According to Garp (1982)

A film I caught on TV late at night, probably in the late 90's and really enjoyed it.

Still a great film to watch for a second time all these years later and my wife enjoyed it too.

8/10

Vertigo (1958) - 7/10

A captivating mystery full of obsession, fear and deceit set in San Francisco. The story remains interesting right up until the end with superb performances from the charming and slightly unbalanced lead and his various female companions.

Although the ideals and style of the film are from a bygone era it still looks and sounds great with great music, iconic imagery and some entertaining special effects.

I'll Sleep When I'm Dead (2003) 5/10

Clive Owen plays the part of a London gangster who returns to the smoke to investigate the death of his brother. A modern take on Get Carter (the legendary 1971 movie starring Michael Caine).

It's okay, there is a scene which I was not expecting! Slowly builds but...

A decent cast could not save it. Missed opportunity.

Robocop 2.

After playing the most recent game I felt the need to re-watch the movies, while you cant say enough good things about the first movie, I cant think of many redeeming qualities of the 2nd film. It might hold the award of the worst squeal to a classic 80's film. The story isn't very good and feel like 5 different stories patch together, the action is very poor, the music is totally forgettable and the acting isn't up to much either, even from a technical point it falls flat.

Positives, the suit look good.

2/10 :(

I was disappointed. I remember watching the trailer at the time, the part where Murphy shoots the smokers cigarette, Robocop got sanitised. :(

The Bourne Trilogy - 9/10

Absolutely brilliant trilogy. I've not watched them for years and watched them back to back. Superb action and story.

Room - 2015 - 8/10

Brie Larson plays a woman who was kidnapped, locked up in a shed, raped and brings a son into the world then finally escapes when the child is 5. Dark drama.

Stir Crazy

... again. Was watching Auf Wiedersehen Pet and then suddenly felt like watching this again. Timothy Spall is excellent.
Was a bit confused thinking Timothy Spall was with Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder. Then saw it is Still Crazy which I will defiantly add to watch list with that cast.

The Birds (1963) - 9/10

A classic horror which starts off as a drama/romance featuring an obsessive woman and a possessive mother but as the birds begin to behave oddly, the tension slowly builds. This is later replaced by a growing suspense and dread which doesn’t let up until the rather abrupt ending. The way they managed to create something disturbing from the mundane is very effective, especially when there’s little you can do to stop it. Some of the special effects are (laughably) bad due to their age but others are still just as effective and the sound the birds make as they surround the house is truly terrifying. Strong acting, a memorable location and good pacing.

Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) - 8/10

Pretty much everything you could want, but also pretty much everything you would expect.

There’s plenty of surprise cameos, humorous and rude jokes and 4th wall breaking quips and some excessively violent and gory fight scenes which are long and entertaining, although with 2 invulnerable heroes there’s never any thrills or suspense.

The special effects and acting were good and the action set to music pieces were superb. The story and settings are inventive and the second lead character brings emotional heft when the plot needs it, but the villains struggle to really stand out and by parodying so much it feels unoriginal, copying rather than innovating at times.
