What film did you watch last night?

Despicable Me 4 (2024) - 6/10

A colourful animation filled with wacky escapades and family heart, but it lacked that spark that which makes a film great.

The main story was ok but not particularly strong and it felt more like ‘The Incredibles’ than ‘Despicable Me’. Still, there was plenty of minion antics and humourous scenes, although this did make the plot feel less cohesive, and the Mega-Minions were a nice addition, but they didn’t really do much or feed into the main plot.

Some good characters but also some poor ones who heavily relied on stereotypes for humour, and some jokes just fell flat.

Twisters (2024) - 8/10

An exhilarating ride of going up against the extremes of nature – the thrill of the chase is infectious and makes for a fun and entertaining film.

The weather effects look realistic, the characters have charm and the modern plot elements fitted in well, as did showing the human consequences of the events.

The story was straightforward with no real surprises, the leads’ relationship was very downplayed and the human impact was skimmed over, but it was highly enjoyable with plenty of spectacle and some good music, even if it was a bit cliché and a bit corny at times.

Settlers

Treading a fine line between being serious and realistic at the risk of lacking in plot and excitement.

Early on I predicted the ending as it seemed to be developing as essentially the same story* to a Play for Today adaptation of Z for Zachariah I saw quite a while back. Although as far as I'm aware no link between the two is acknowledged. There is also a 2015 movie adaptation of Z for Zachariah, but I haven't seen that.

Girl living on a protected farm survives the war that ends the world. Her family then get killed/disappear and a strange man arrives and moves in. Ultimately he decides to rape her, she kills him and leaves the safety of the farm to head out into the deadly, unprotected world on her own.

Have you seen the original Twoster? It's far superior and a lot more exhilarating.

Bad Boys Ride or Die - 6/10

I'm a huge Bad Boys fan, but this just seemed lacking in what makes it great. Martin Lawrence seems in a bad way tbh, so when delivering a line slowly, it doesn't have that zing it should. Not necessarily a bad movie, but not in the same league as the first two (I can't actually remember the third, which I perhaps should have watched before this one)

Yes, when it was first released, which is getting on for about 30 years ago. Yes, the cynic in me thought Twisters would be an unnecessary remake, but I thought it was good fun and entertaining summer blockbuster with a bit of that Spielberg family entertainment feel to it.

Robocop 2.

After playing the most recent game I felt the need to re-watch the movies, while you cant say enough good things about the first movie, I cant think of many redeeming qualities of the 2nd film. It might hold the award of the worst squeal to a classic 80's film. The story isn't very good and feel like 5 different stories patch together, the action is very poor, the music is totally forgettable and the acting isn't up to much either, even from a technical point it falls flat.

Positives, the suit look good.

2/10 :(

It's still better than Robocop 3 though lol.

Finally got around to watching The Boy and the Heron with the misses. As we are both big fans of Ghibli, I don't know why it took us so long, but we certainly were not disappointed.

Lovely film with all the Ghibli quirks, as expected.

Deadpool 3.

If 5/10 is average..
If you want a plot then this is a 4.5/10.
If you want deadpool then this is a 6.5/10.
If you want deadpool and Hugh Jackman topless (read a large portion of the audience did) then this is 9/10.

It's deadpool but I found the jokes could have added some more compared to previous films.

Deadpool & Wolverine - Absolutely fantastic. Was hearing good things and heading in I knew it should be good but I was still surprised just how much I enjoyed this movie. Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman absolutely outdid themselves. I can confidently say this was the first MCU movie in a long time that was actually good since End Game. Is it as epic? No. Is it fan service? Absolutely but it was funny, witty and was filled with nuggets from past superhero movies good or bad from start to finish. The performance was fantastic and had a brilliant script that knew what it set out to achieve and what fans wanted. 9/10 for me.

Robocop 3

Well here is a post so controversial that the mods might move this to the speaker’s corner but I liked Robocop 3. While Robocop 2 is just a poor film from start to finish, I feel like Robocop 3 is more of a case of the bad cancelling out the good.

The Good

It’s great to have Basil Poledouris back for the score I suspect he is going some of the heavy lifting here, adding a bit of soul and drama when the acting isn’t the best.

The guy replacing Peter Weller does a serviceable job but its Murphy’s story I like in this film, its part revenge thriller, part fighting for the underdog against the big nasty corporation and ultimately the man making the choices and not the programming. Other thing I like is that Robocop drive the plot rather than waiting for things to happen, like when he goes on the offensive half way through the film and chases after McDaggit. The story is fit for purpose.

McDaggit while being a bit of paint by numbers villain and centrally no Ronny Cox the actor playing him is having fun and he has the smugness and sliminess that just make you want to see him beaten, so he is always good when on screen.

Also a better shot and edited than the 2nd film (for the most part) and the action is ok, the van chase and police station flame out (not really a shootout) was fun.

It interesting to revisit after all these years as my opinion was the same as most peoples but it starts off really strong, a lot of the silliness happens the further you get into the film, speaking of which.

The Bad

Ninja robots. They are kind of like the henchman in this film and a foil for Robocop (like ED209 in the first film) but they have one small problem, they are awful. I think the idea by making them human looking was to suggest they more advance but they just have no presence what so ever. If they were not so bad you wouldn’t remember them.

The Jetpack, let’s face it, this is a teleporter or faster than light drive, it’s something written so Robocop can be absence and then appear and save the day when the script needs him too and its also implemented so badly at the same time. I don’t think there is one shot where it looks good.

Also some questionable acting from some of the cast, when your child actor isn’t the worst in the film you have issues.

The movie thinks it needs to be cool but doesn’t have the first clue how to do it, do you think there was a bunch of movie executives shouting out, oh let’s give Robocop a flamethrower, oh let’s give him a machine gun arm, oh let’s give him a jetpack, oh lets him fight ninja robots? Most of it falls flat.

I would watch it over the 2nd movie any day 6/10
