What film did you watch last night?

Young Guns (1988)

I had fond memories of watching this as a kid. I think I saw it on Cable TV when we were staying in a Orlando in 1990ish so I would have only been 8 or something, but then I must have recorded it on TV in the UK at some point as I remember watching it a lot as a kid.

Either it has not held up well, or my simple childlike mind appreciated very simple movies! This glosses over so much. Towards the end the 'Regulators' rock up at a border town near Mexico. There's a brief scene (with no dialogue) of 'Charlie' putting a coat over a Mexican woman near a campfire. The next second those 2 are getting married, and then he rides away to help the Regulators whilst she is in tears. There's no indication of time passing so it looks like it all takes place in one night.

I knew it was based on real people, but I just assumed the whole movie was mostly all made up. However, I did some reading and there are a few accurate things in there: http://www.aboutbillythekid.com/young_guns_page_YG1.htm

I enjoyed Maika Monroe's performances in It Follows and Longlegs, so I was quite happy to give this one a go.
Another good performance by her, and overall, a film worth checking out, IMO. 'Sort' of a spoiler below, but nothing much revealed.

I wasn't expecting the ending to turn out the way it did. The film did manage to keep me guessing through some of it, too.

I've just noticed another one of hers on Netflix, called The Guest. I'll check that out later! :)
^^ Just realised I've seen that before. Not a bad movie from memory.
The Guest is a really underrated film, also if you like Maika Monroe then Tau on netflix is pretty good also.

Gran Turismo (2023)

I don't know who this film is for or who could possibly enjoy it. Every aspect of it makes me roll my eyes or throw my hands up in disbelief.

As a gamer, a sim racer and someone who has play all the GT games up to six. It doesn't represent of any aspect of those things and is dumbed down for people that don't have an knowledge or experience instead.

As a fan of motorsport it's just as bad. The on screen depictions are nothing like real motorsport and more like the Fast and Furious than real motor racing.

As a film fan, the acting is dire, even from so called seasoned actors who've done decent work in the past. The dialogue even worse and the whole film is just cheesy and childish nonsense. Not even coming close to Neil Blomkamp's previous work, which I've actually enjoyed a lot.

There's really is nothing to redeem this film in anyway at all. It's easily one of the worst films I've sat through and actually finished. Something I'm questioning my sanity over, when I should've turned it off within the first ten minutes.

Films that feature car chases have degraded over the years. The Fast and the Furious and others are ludicrous, and a CGI fantasy.

Classic car chase movies with stunt drivers, real cars, a plot, are nonexistent these days. The Bourne series was the last I remember.

To this day, Bullitt has never been bettered.

Just been to see 'The Substance'. Was decent. Completely over the top but some good body horror parts in there.

Probably 20 mins too long but I would give it 7.5/10

Rebel Ridge 8.5/10.

Fantastic actor, need to see him in an action movie. Solid storytelling, atmosphere and build-up but intriguing, if not anticlimatic ending. Seems to be a deeper meaning to it according to reviews and reddit.

Rebel Ridge (2024)

A surprisingly decent film from Netflix for a change. I did think it was going to be a bit similar to First Blood at one point, but it was more restrained and a bit more complex. I would have liked a slightly shorter runtime, as I thought it could've upped it's pace a bit getting to the final third. Overall it's a well made and well acted film, that's easy to recommend.

Bullitt is still outstanding car chase wise. The film Ronin(1998) has some of the best car chase scene I've ever seen. At the time many media outlets called the some of the best ever committed to film, along with Bullitt and The French Connection.

Don't think there has been anything since to better those.

A Man Called Otto.

Found under NowTV's mood boosters, I knew this was the film to watch when at the start Tom Hanks is a grumpy old man fighting the injustice of a cash register not pricing up his items correctly, however I think I need words with the marketing team at NowTV as that hit the feels. :(

Alien Romulus - 6/10
Strange one, starts off with some lovely world building. Looks the part most of the time but some really contrived events to keep the story going really start to stack up particularly towards the end, plus the "offspring" has a tinge of Resurrection's ending to it (Merced also seems criminally under used). The guy playing Andi steals the show, the CGI effects team for Rook not so much.

Really good film. Much better than higher budget Netflix offerings. I actually liked that fact it was over 2 hours. The story is quite unique/different to other small town action/thriller/dramas, and the 2 hours + really lets the story be told without cutting corners.

Alpha Dog (2006)

This was a film picked at random by my Zidoo box's spin feature, so we went in totally blind. More than likely a movie from a job lot of second hand disks that's been ripped to my media server and forgotten about.

I had no idea it was based on true events and as such all of the main cast characters were deeply unlikeable or at best very annoying. Not being a fan of gangster rap music also made sticking with the film very difficult.

Either way we watched until the end and I sort of have mixed feelings. It wasn't terrible and it wasn't great and would've been a better documentary or documentary with dramatic recreations. I'm guessing they fictionalised all character names to avoid getting permission or the rights to the real persons life stories.

After reading the Wikipedia articles around the real events, I think that would've been a better option than watching the film.
