What film did you watch last night?

Hell or High Water https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2582782/

As is often the case, I saw the recommendation and thought I'd check it out.
It's been one I've been considering looking at for a while, and as it turns out, it was a good'n.

Now I come to think of it, I may have seen it before, but it must have been a while back.
Not much of it came to mind while watching.

Road house, the remake...
Why Gyllenhall did this I'll never know. I think they spent the entire production budget on his wages, cause the rest of it was utterly terrible, including that **** McGregor.

0/10
I've not seen it but I seem to recall reviews saying it was solid enough? I could be old and got it all wrong in my memory of course

Bruiser (2000)

Mostly awful George A Romero movie, the premise has some merit but the execution doesn't produce anything to recommend. The acting isn't great and neither is the dialogue. All the characters are unlikeable. There's virtually no tension or suspense and it's not even that gory.

After going through his filmography, this is only the third Romero film I've ever seen. The other two are second and third "Dead" films, which is quite a surprise to me. But if Bruiser is indicative of his later works, then I don't think I'll be watching anymore of his later "Dead" films.

3/10

I want to watch Beetlejuice 2 at the cinema, so decided to watch the first Beetlejuice last night.

I originally saw it in 1991 when I was 13. I remember enjoying watching it for its supernatural theme but otherwise didn't remember much about it. The bit I did vividly remember though was near the end where the fireplace stretched out into a bigger uneven shape and became a portal.

Now at age 46, I still enjoyed it. It was scary but in a lighthearted way, kinda a diet version of Rocky Horror to make it a 12 instead of a 15. I liked the musical numbers. Beetlejuice himself was nuts and he reminds me of Keith out of the Prodigy :D The gothic girl who had the ability to see the dead was cool too and I liked her dancing in the final musical number. Think she was on puppet strings when she was hanging in front of the staircase. The bits with the warped corridors (very blue in colour) reminded me of Alice in Wonderland.

8/10.

The Irishman https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1302006/

I think this is about the third time now that I've revisited it. I've found it gets better with each watch,
though overall, I don't regard it as one of the greats movies. But, for me, still a good one to watch now and again.

I can't quite put my finger on what seems to be lacking,
but maybe it's just a case of so much time having elapsed since the likes of Casino and Goodfellas.

All in all, I think the effect of the attempt to reduce the age of the characters works fairly well.

Yea I really like this movie. Underrated in my opinion.

More Disney

Tonight - Coco.

Really shows the difference between Pixar and Disney. So much better than Encanto in pretty much all respects. Beautiful film.

All of Us Strangers (2023)

I have no idea what all of the professional reviewers see in this film, with all the acclaim it received. I was ready to turn it off within the first 15 minutes and by the end I wished I had done.

Too many lingering shots with no dialogue for me. Half the film is a guy staring in to space trying to look all moody and thoughtful. The other half is interaction with his parents from his childhood or his new mysterious neighbour. Non of which is particularly gripping or interesting.

At one point early on I thought he was in some kind of metaphoric purgatory, but that was just me by the end of the 105 minute runtime, that actually felt like an eternity.

2/10 (all for the 80's occasional soundtrack)
