What film did you watch last night?

The Substance - 8/10
Came out smiling at this, and that’s despite a needle phobia. A sharp, stylish social satire on women’s chase of eternal beauty and societal expectations of them. Lovely cinematography and a thumping sound track as well make it well polished other than…

does lose its way at the end for the final Katie Price-esque form and the Carrie scene particular as it turns to just mockery of “beauty” horrors.

Morbius - 5/10
Derivative super hero nonsense about an American scientist having to offshore bat research to escape local regulation then having to clean up his mess when it goes to ****. Gets a bonus point for its allegory of Fauci.

Katie Price...lmfao! :p

Speak No Evil (2024)

A decent thriller which takes it time to gradually ratchet up the tension.

Not sure how close to the original it is.

I understand that they essentially chose their victims wisely so that nobody would realise they were missing, but I didn't quite get a handle on why they went through so many different kids? Did they cut the tongues from all of them? Unknown.

The daughter needing her bunny was a convenient plot point that they relied on a bit too much. There's no way I would be going back for that after escaping the house the first time.

7.5/10

A recent few...

Strange Darling - Went in just on the description without watching the trailer or reading reviews and had a great time.
Nicely weird and retro with Willa Fitzgerald putting in an excellent perfomance.

Speaking of weird: Longlegs
It was ok. People talk about the atmosphere, but a lot of that relied on it being a world where only 20W lightbulbs exist.
Her hyperventilating all the time got on my nerves.

Sting - Sure, it was predictable, with obvious Ripley/Alien homages, but it pulled it off well and gets a thumbs up.
What more do you want from a movie about a giant alien spider terrorising an apartment building with ridiculously spacious air vents?

Alien: Romulus - While I did enjoy it on a surface level and it definitely looked great, people are right about it basically being a remix/rehash of every other Alien movie in one.
The last act lost the plot IMO.

I unfortunately ended up reading the plot on Wikipedia expecting it to be broadly the same....it sounds a lot darker.

I havnt seen the new one, I watched the original a year or so back and some of it sticks in my mind. The whole film makes you feel mildly uneasy, a bit frustrated at the actionsof the family but as said they picked the victims because of their suggestibility and lack of fight back. The end however I remeber thinking I wish I hadn't watched it all, it was just upsetting.

Sphere (1998) - 6.5/10

Yeah, I know it doesn't really make a lot of sense. Nor does the book it's based on, to be honest. But it's enjoyable hippy-trippy nonsense and Dustin Hoffman does some good Dustin Hoffmaning. It's certainly better than most gave it credit for being when it was released, IMO.

Deadpool and Wolverine 6.5/10

Decent enough popcorn fodder with loads of nods and cameos. Did feel like fan fiction (which with Reynold's love of Deadpool as a character i suppose it is). One dimensional baddie as always for a superhero film.

The book is miles better than the movie though.

Maybe they should adapt it as a Netflix style TV series.

Boss Level - 6/10
Actually thought this was something else video game related (the first person shooter film, can't remember the name of it now). Was alright, but nothing special. Burly special forces bloke is stuck in a groundhog day style loop that ends and repeats each time he dies. Film follows him as he tries to work out what's going on and what he needs to do to escape.

Deadpool & Wolverine - 8/10

Nice to watch something where it felt like the production cared about the audience. Obviously not for everyone, but a good movie if you’re interested in the super hero vibe.

I refreshed on the original Beetlejuice a few weeks ago (8/10) as I wanted to see Beetlejuice 2.

I finally saw BJ2 at the Stafford Odeon tonight. Again, a good 8/10 from me. I liked that it stayed as a semi-musical with the familiar theme tune and a remake of the Banana Boat, and I particularly liked the music during the dramatic wedding scenes near the end of the film. There were more weird and wonderful ghosts/monsters to see and I liked that the aesthetics stayed faithful to the original. I'm not sure if it was right though to include so many mobile phone references as that might age badly, but at the same time, I liked that the film still had the old style CRT TV. I liked the ghost that stitched herself together while "Tragedy" was playing in the background.

'A different man' - This was solid. Male actor with facial disfigurement, who is shy, nervous etc etc undergoes experimental treatment and is cured and has a normal face. Starts becoming bolder in personal life, sleeping with women etc for the first time however when it comes acting etc he needs to wear a cast of disfigured face. He meets someone else with the same facial disfigurement that he had (however this man is completely comfortable and confident in his own skin) and everything goes south from there. 7.5/10

Joker 2 - Great performance from Phoenix and well produced however i didn't really appreciate the 'musical' parts personally and it felt a bit jumbled up. 5/10.
