What film did you watch last night?

Arrival, watched all of it but found it quite boring and a bit of a stretch.

I really liked the subtle twist in this:

You can view the film as it’s presented. But if you play close attention, you realise that events happen in a different order. i.e, their interactions with their child occur after their encounter with the aliens… not before.

This is given away by the child talking about how her mum and dad are famous for talking to animals… a reference to them being famous for talking to the aliens.

At least… that’s how I remember it. It’s been a while!

Deadpool & Wolverine (2024)

Second viewing after seeing it at the cinema on release and really enjoying it. Second time was enjoyable, but not quite as good and felt like it was lacking something. Overall I think we've had all the Deadpool we're ever going to need.

The Devil’s Rejects (on Shudder - which is an Amazon Prime additional subscription, has a free trial)

This is the follow-up to House of 1000 Corpses which I reviewed earlier in the week.

Stylistically, this cuts out the ‘supernatural elements’ and ‘goofiness’ of the original. Plot-wise, it follows the murderous family as they try and stay ahead of the law.

This is a really dark film with lots of sexual violence and torture, which makes it very uncomfortable at times. But it’s riveting. The characters, even minor ones, are great and have heaps of personality. There’s a lot of humour too, carried over from the first film. Has a very satisfying conclusion as well.

Well worth a watch, recommended (if you can deal with ‘uncomfortable content’).

Grand Prix (1966)

Watched this afternoon.

From a technical perspective it's amazing the images that they captured on film in the era when the film was made and the technology available.

It also represents some of the best and most detailed footage of Grand Prix cars and tracks of the 1960's.

Unfortunately that's about as much praise I can give. There's not a lot of anything of interest that happens in between the races. The acting and dialogue is very much of it's time and at three hours long, it's a bit of a slog.

Maybe one for older motor racing fans only and just to skip through to the race sequences only.

Watched them both as well and thought the second one was better as you said. Watched the devil's rejects on Tubi.

The Wailing (Korean Horror - bought on Apple Store)

Bumbling cop tries to solve the mystery of a series of strange happenings and murders in his hometown.

Very mixed feelings on this. It’s tonally inconsistent; tongue in cheek at times, serious and somber in others. It’s unnecessarily long but picks up with decent suspense in the closing act, even if how it wraps up is a little underwhelming.

An intriguing journey but nothing more.
