What film did you watch last night?

Not technically a film, but more relevant here than the TV thread.

Shudder have a 8 part documentary (each episode 45 mins) of ‘101 scariest horror moments of all time’ and it’s a damn good watch

Since it’s from 2022 it contains a bunch of goodies from more recent years and it’s cool that it covers pretty much everything the genre has to offer; even if things are not to my personal tastes it’s fun to hear people talk about what makes it special.

I’m glad to say it includes things such as the recent ‘Haunting of Hill House’ TV series as well as the mother of all jump scares from ‘Exorcist 3’. Truly a well-crafted horror fan’s list!

I’ve got a few goodies to watch from it too. I’d only seen 63 of them.

Speak no Evil - 7.5 / 10

I noticed this is an English remake of a '22 Norwegian film. Usually I like to the see originals, but after watching this one I can't see how you'd improve on McAvoys performance, he was definitely the star of the show. Great tense thriller.

Every time I see this film mentioned, all I can think of is See no evil, Hear no evil with Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder...

The original Danish one is far bleaker, worth a watch to compare

I preferred the original. McAvoy reminded me of McGregor in roadhouse

Terrified (on Shutter)

Yes, not ‘Terrifier’, but ‘Terrified’.

I first heard of this Argentine spooker from 2017 only this week when I was watching the ‘101 scariest horror moments of all time’… which actually gave quite a lot away so I’d recommend going in blind!

In short, this is one of the better horror films I’ve seen in quite some time. How did this go under my radar?!

I’ll give nothing away, but I will say this film successfully creates a real sense of ‘presence’. The characters also feel extremely believable despite not really having much screen time. Just goes to show you don’t need huge amounts of back story to create a compelling watch.

It might not get under people’s skin to the extent of other modern classics, but it’s definitely unsettling and frequently startling. A must-watch for fans of the eerie.

Edit: I totally agree with the tagline of the top IMDB review: “refreshingly well done.”

saw this some time ago. Bloody good!

Steel Magnolias (1989)

Not a film I would've watched back then, but I thought it was quite delightful. It has a great cast, it's charming, it's funny and everyone seems to bring their "A" game.

7/10
