What film did you watch last night?

Abigail (2024) - 6.5/10

Nothing about how this film plays out is in any way surprising. The 'twists', such as they are, are about as tucked away as...well, pick any modern TV series or film. It's a completely lost art. Actually, it's as if writers these days come up with a twist, and they're so proud of it, and they can't help themselves so they feel compelled to nudge-nudge telegraph it. Hard.

Now, I'll give this film its due. Once the major twist happens it doesn't try to pretend that the audience haven't long since figured it out. That puts it one up on a lot of shows and films, which treat the whole deal like the audience didn't in fact figure out that Abigail is the vampiric enforcer Valdez and pat themselves on the back for being oh-so smart and fooling the oh-so dumb viewers at home or in the theatre.

Anyway, ranty bit over. There's lots of violence and gore, it's more-than competently shot and the cast are all good fun. Speaking of, a touching nod to one of the stars in the credits (Angus Cloud died of an accidental multiple drug overdose between filming and release) as well.

Dark Angel aka I Come in Peace. Popped up on Prime Video whilst looking for something to watch. As soon as I saw the thumbnail I remembered the film and it was enjoyable tosh. Just as it was 30 years ago. I loved films like this in the 80’s and 90’s.
Watched this last week too, childhood movie for me

Ghostbusters II re-release at the cinema - really enjoyed it. Didn't realise that the baby in the film was played by twins, and one of them died a few years back.

Sadly mental health issues and took his own life. I'm friends with his brother Will on FB and he does talk about Hank and the issues every so often, including a full account of what happened leading to the fateful day. Quite an advocate for mental health now.

Small things like these - zzz/10

If you like slow Irish dramas that progress along with the speed of a handicapped snail with a limp where nothing....at all....happens, then you're in luck, this film's for you!

Cillian Murphy mopes his way through looking like a depressed lost puppy who just sighs, continuously, and delivers a lot of coal.

The Count of Monte-Cristo (2024)

8/10, great film and visuals

I don't mind subs at all and think it added to the ambience tbh. I remember watching the 2002 version when I was younger, nice to relive the story again :)

Total Recall (1990)

No not the god awful remake.

This is a not quite classic Arnie movie, it's not Predator, Commando and certainly not Terminator.

It's not bad though, although I don't think it's aged. Also think the first half is better before they get to Mars. Sharon Stone was very hot in 1990 though.

Back in the day I might have given this a 7 or 8 but realistically today........it was 34 years ago.

5/10

The Godfather I & II , 10/10 , cant decide if II is better With De Niro or I with Brando .
Although i did do II in one sitting so that might edge it.

Smile 2- thought this was pretty good, i don't remember much from the first one so I'm guessing this one was better. The mrs doesn't like horrors but she let me put it on but "watched" most of it from behind a cushion. 7/10

Smile 2 - 6.5/10

I gave the original a 5, thought this was a big improvement. Story was much more engaging and some of the scenes were brilliant. It suffers from being a little too long though like the first one. These films just don't need to be over two hours long. Also it got to the point where there were so many 'this is real, no it isn't!' Fake outs that I just kind of lost engagement and wanted them to pick an ending. Once again really good lead though, she really sold the character.

The Day of the Jackal (1973) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069947/

Solid movie, though possibly showing its age a little now. Still very good, however.
Glad I've finally got around to watch it. :)

Rocket Man https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2066051/

Pretty good, though I wasn't sure at first if the lead would suit the role he was playing, but overall I thought he did a very good job.
Although I don't like musicals, this was one of those rare exceptions due to the subject, though at times, it did drag a little.
Still, well-worth checking out if, like me, you love Elton John's earlier works (70s - 80s).

Have you seen it recently though?

Maybe I am being a little harsh, but I'm not sure it's aged that well. I actually fell asleep half way through and watched the second half another day.

I think this says more about you than the film :)

Yeah, I've seen it recently.
Have elements of it aged? Yes.
Does it matter? No.

A classic either has the magic or it doesn't. Total Recall absolutely does.

Saying all that, film is obviously subjective and one man's classic is another's man's meh. You do you.

Total recall is peak Arnie, yeah Terminator is great but Total Recall is classic 90s like Demolition Man, Judge Dread, True Lies, Jingle all the way (a must watch at Christmas time) , The Running Man (not 90s but close!) among others

Although I like kindergarten cop aswell
