What film did you watch last night?

Watched Black Adam, the definition of average, felt just like pretty much every other superhero movie i have watched recently and brought nothing new to the table.

I quite like horror films, and I've probably watched more than my fair share of not particularly good ones (like the Saw marathon I did earlier this year lol). It's definitely not bad, I think the feel of unease in the first half is well done and I like the evil Jonathan Creek feel of Grant's character. Just felt the resolution was very 'oh crap how do we finish this"

Now I watched The Descent last night having not seen that for ages, now that is a class film throughout.

I think The Descent is one of the best horrors of the 2000's, the feeling of claustrophobic dread is immense and it was a fantastic follow up to Dog Soldiers.
Its a shame Neil Marshall hasn't done anything as good as those two since.

Yeah i was looking at his wikipedia page last night, it's baffling how he made 2 good films and then just utter crap since.

I didn't actually think Doomsday was that bad, kinda like his homage to Escape from New York but it wasn't up to the standard of his first two films, Centurion was just bland and i have avoided his Hellboy film after hearing about it.

Also watched Heretic, Hugh Grant pretty much carried this, the first 2/3 of the film was really good but the ending a real let down, Id agree on what someone else above suggested, that they didn't know how to rap it up. Overall though its more than watchable, the Monopoly comparison was pretty much spot on :D i can see that annoying quite a few of the followers out there! I got quite annoyed at how many water leaks there was yet zero sign of mold... :D

Lethal Weapon (1987)

Second Christmas film and for me an absolute classic. I've watched this film so many times, especially on VHS, I know every word of dialogue.

I will say it's getting a bit dated now. There's a few homophobic comments, some of the dialogue is a bit cheesy and Gibson's performance is a little over the top at times.

But the chemistry between Gibson and Glover and some great actions sequences still hold up really well and make it a film you can just about watch today.

Real world score 6/10
Nostalgia score 10/10

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim (2024) - 7/10

Not as epic or original as it could have been, but it has a good story and range of characters.

Although there was plenty of action and drama it lacked suspense and humour and ended up being a bit boring at times as it went through the motions.

It was also far too focused on the hero and the music, whilst great, was a bit overused and the name-dropping references at the end felt unnecessary.

The animation style was off-putting as it looked too static at times and completely out of place when superimposed over the realistic scenery.

Oppenheimer - 10/10, a masterclass!

Haven't quite finished it yet but what a masterpiece.

I guess it's more of a documentary than a film though.

Carry-On, what a waste of time...
I watched it last night. First thoughts was its Phonebooth re skinned. Second thoughts, this could have been made into a good Die hard movie, much like Die hard 3 with the bad guy using a phone to keep tabs on our heroes.
Anyway, it was 'ok' but not rushing to se it any time soon.

Deadpool/Wolverine. 6/10

The plot was absolutely bonkers, but there was no other way to write the pair of them into the MCU. It was 2 hours of almost non-stop sarcasm from the pair of them. Villain I thought was weak. Not really any need for all the deadpool variants, especially Nicepool the Jar Jar binks of the MCU.

When I finished It all I could think was Phone Booth vs Die Hard 2!

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Christmas film number three and a first time watch as well.

Didn't do it for me. I didn't find any of the songs particularly memorable and most of the time they were more like the character singing their lines, rather then musical numbers.

You can commend the stop motion animation and the production design but I still think that Coralline is the bench mark to beat.

5/10
