What film did you watch last night?

Bringing home Christmas - godawful seasonal pap with a pro-military bent. 2/10 as a film, 8/10 in the beloved 'Crap Christmas film' genre as it actually had a plot and some acting, putting it well above the average.

I quite like horror films, and I've probably watched more than my fair share of not particularly good ones (like the Saw marathon I did earlier this year lol). It's definitely not bad, I think the feel of unease in the first half is well done and I like the evil Jonathan Creek feel of Grant's character. Just felt the resolution was very 'oh crap how do we finish this"

Now I watched The Descent last night having not seen that for ages, now that is a class film throughout.
Well I watched it, and was disappointed!

I'll be generous and give it a 5/10. The acting was good so I didn't turn it off, but the story was terrible. I've not been religious for 35 years, maybe that is why I didn't really gel with the theme.

Red One (2024)

So Amazon expect me to pay an extra £3 a month not to see any adverts, yet they burn $250 million on this CGI riddled tosh. And whoever did the colour grading needs their eyes testing. Why was it so dark for almost all of its runtime?

So to wash the taste of this tripe out of my mouth I watched a real action hero film.

Predator (1987)

The Mary Poppins of action films, practically perfect in every way.

Wonka

Something so cheery and whimsical would usually annoy the **** out of me, but it actually was quite harmless and fun.

Guy playing Wonka (Timothée Chalamet) - he was amazing, really. Cast were otherwise OK, the ‘kidified’ characters may grate on adults but they don’t have enough screen-time to become truly annoying.

The subtle irreverent humour was good - little throwaway things… this line made me laugh:

“caramel… salted! Using salty tears from a Russian clown.”

I really didn’t like a major plot device being about the need to check small print in contracts…?! That was odd. Are they trying to give everyone anxiety?! :p

Less than 2 hours is also very welcome, as the film didn’t feel bloated.

Overall a silly, throwaway time - good for a cosy evening.

Lord of the Rings: War of the Rhoherim

Mixed thoughts on this.

Aesthetically, I really enjoyed it. It felt like it was part of that ‘universe’ and set in New Zealand. The familiar musical motifs were similarly rousing.

Plot-wise it wastes no time getting on with a ‘set up’, which was welcome, but I soon started to suspect this was a six part TV show stitched together. The characters are severely under-developed. There just isn’t enough rapport between them all to feel vested. By the half-way point this starts to make it sag and I felt like I was binge watching a Netflix series.

Matters did get a bit ‘spicier’ and ‘Game of Thrones’-y than I expected, which caused my interest to peak, but overall more work on the characters was needed to make this satisfying.

Final thought, the lead woman is drawn and dressed with such emphasis on her feminine physique that it was a bit distracting (for this simple man) :o Her boobs and waist, emphasised with belts, may well each get spin off films… with the small of her back being the focus of series 2.

You noticed how dark is was too? Was meant to be HDR but it was flat and very dim throughout - thought it was the tv here!

Why did it lose the 0.5?

My brother asked me what the best Arnie movie is and I replied Predator without hesitation. It's damn near perfect, and it is so disappointing that the sequels and spinoffs are so dire.
The Running Man and Total Recall are great too.

It's hard to pick!

Modern films just don't compare, or is it nostalgia? Are TV shows where it's at nowadays?

I used to think T2 was the best but having watched T1 properly, I think it's better than T2, even though I still like T2.

Unsure if T1 is better then Predator though, tough one, both equally as good for different reasons.
T1 is great as is T2, and Aliens. James Cameron was redefining the sci-fi action genre, pity he went all Avatar.

But Predator the top dawg for me. And McTiernan's Die Hard is not bad either.

They don't make 'em like they used to!

One of the Arnie trinity of Conan, terminator or Predator would be my pick for best with Predator winning by a millimetre.

Difficult choice. :(

I do love total recall as well.
