What film did you watch last night?

Smile 2. It was just an expansion from the first. It doesn't really bring anything new to the table but it did keep me entertained. I thought it was better than the first with Naomi Scott as a much better actor. 6/10.

Thirteen Ghosts (2001)

This film is genuinely fascinating to me for a few reasons.

Films like this - low intensity action / horrors aimed at teens - are NEVER made anymore. The tendency now is to make everything ‘hyper intense’ or bleak. This and films like Deep Rising, or even Deep Blue Sea, have become a relic.

… perhaps for the best in this case because, unlike Deep Rising (which is a classic), Thirteen Ghosts is awful. The ‘ghosts’ look absolutely ridiculous and so cheesy that it spoils the whole. Shame, because the set-up is spooky ooky and fun. Those aesthetic choices just take it too far though. The constant ‘psychic vision’ stuff becomes annoying quite quickly too.

Also… did you know this film was a remake? Even better… a remake of a 3D film! I remember catching a clip of it on TV once and it kept saying “now put on your 3D glasses!” :D

Then I found this out from Wiki, very cool:

As with several of his more famous productions, producer William Castle used a gimmick to promote 13 Ghosts, as audience members were given the choice to see the ghosts. In theaters, most scenes were in black-and-white, but scenes involving ghosts were shown in a process dubbed "Illusion-O". The filmed elements of the actors and the sets – everything except the ghosts – had a blue filter applied to the footage, while the ghost elements had a red filter and were superimposed over the frame. Audiences received viewing glasses with red and blue cellophane filters. Unlike with early 3D glasses having one eye red and the other cyan or blue, the Illusion-O device required viewers to look through a single color with both eyes. Looking through the red filter intensified the images of the ghosts, while the blue filter "removed" them

Film is a generous 4.5/10… but interesting as a ‘time capsule’ from not so long ago :)

Presumed Innocent (1990)

One of the few Harrison Ford films I've never seen. Might have been good in it's day but we found it a bit slow and lacking any real drama.

The Apple TV show makes for better viewing.

5/10

Total Recall 1990

After talking about it the other day I had to watch it and its still fantastic. Its got a good story, great look to it, its got that Paul Verhoeven impact action and a fantastic supporting cast.

I guess my one complaint is that I think its got one of Jerry Goldsmiths weaker scores, its just not that memorable.

I could watch this any day. 9/10

Trading Places

They genuinely don’t make films like this anymore. I believe it was a staple on BBC/ITV during the late eighties. There are real laugh-out-loud moments throughout, but some of the language and the inclusion of nudity—especially for what I think was a PG film at the time—really highlights how attitudes have shifted over the past 40 years.

Still, after all this time, I’d give it a solid 7.5/8 out of 10. My 17-year-old son watched it with me and more or less agreed with my rating, which says a lot about its timeless humor.

Joker: Folie à Deux - 8/10

Went into this thinking it was going to be unwatchable but I cannot see what all the negative online stuff is about. Great performances all round, Hildur Guðnadóttir score and, as someone who can't usually stand musicals, I found myself enjoying the 'it's a musical!' parts. It could have (and maybe should have) been a completely different film with Joker conquering Gotham, but eh, I liked it.

Knock at the Cabin

Pretty stupid film. Didn't even realise it was Shyamalan until the titles came up and almost turned it off. I should have done. Bautista was great in it, just a shame the rest of it was stupid.

Total Recal 1990 - Im so glad i grew up in the 80's / 90's. You just dont get these action films any more. Not Arnies best, not the rewatch value of say Conan or Commando but this is a corker, and it gave the daily mail a stroke back in the day due to the body count, which just pushes it score up a notch! 8.5/10

The Kitchen on Netflix 9/10.

Don’t know how I came across this last night but I’m glad I did.

It’s a simple take on social classes, looking after your own and making the right decisions. I was glued from start to finish.

I’d recommend but I think most might be a bit disappointed, it’s slow at places, you need to pay attention to the subtle storytelling and performances. Those looking for Top Boy in space will be hugely disappointed, there’s no cliche sci-fi, despite being in that category.

She had a fine pair!! Or still does I dunno.....

Kraven the Hunter (2024) - 4/10

Bland, slow paced and boring with wooden acting and cliché characters.

The origins story is fine but is too long and ends with little drama.

The actions scenes, special effects, use of gore and violence is good and the range of settings add some variety, but apart from the use of animals, there’s nothing original or inspired about it and it doesn’t feel like a comic book adaptation.

Red One - better than i thought it would be, decent enough film to watch with the family and turn brain off. 6/10
I'll give it a watch then. I opened up the app and pressed the selection button one too many times while the app loaded and it started automatically playing this film, as it was featured on the main menu and activated on my press. If I don't watch it it'll forever be in my continue watching bar.
