What film did you watch last night?

Home Alone 2 - 6.5 / 10

It's kind of the first movie done in a New York brownstone, which is no bad thing as the first is great.

Carry-On 6 / 10

I feel like it's trying to capture the magic of Die Hard and falls reasonably short. The guy is definitely no John McClane. It's a reasonable enough watch, I didn't feel like I'd wasted two hours, but some of it was rather contrived (such as the sniper being in just the right part of the car park and the g/f standing in just the right window... and the hero not just pulling his g/f to safety as soon as he saw the red dot)

We watched this for the first time last night

Took me 10-15 mins to get into, but then it gradually opened up.

I'd probably give it 8/10 at the moment. Maybe it will grow on me more, as the years go by.

I think i'm going to have to watch it. On a very deep level it speaks to me as someone who was boarding school educated, but what sealed it was directed by Alexander Payne and starring Paul Giamatti. I loved sideways.

Paddington

This was inexplicably good. Wholesome and, if you’re not in a cynical mood, always staying on the right side of grating.

I like how the villain was both comedic and menacing… rare to strike that balance so well.

One of the better family films I’ve seen recently, looking forward to seeing number 2, perhaps later today.

7/10

Are you talking about the new one where he goes back to peru?! I'm waiting for it to show up on apple TV and preparing myself for Olivia Coleman to make a turn as a villainous nun. Not a spoiler, I'm just dreading the possibility.

No, I watched ‘Paddington 1’. So I have number 2 to get to before I watch number 3 which is the Peru one :)

Will probably watch Paddington this afternoon

do you watch the theatrical, or the british edit with the extra songs? also if you liked that, you should watch the christmas carol with patrick stewart and kate winslet. There was some wonderful animation in that.
Just the regular one, didn't realise there was an alternative version about.

I have seen the Patrick Stuart version but not for sometime so will definitely rewatch it over Christmas.

The extended edit contains songs like this:
which was edited (I believe) for pacing reasons. I'm not sure if Disney + uses this version. Persoanlly I get it, as I feel the song meanders a little but does cut out a scene that makes scrooge more...Sympathetic.

Yeah it's one of my favourite films.

Paddington was something that the producers of the peter rabbit film needed to watch and then proceed to do two things:

1.) Not hire James Corden, as that was guaranteed to make me not want to watch the film
2.) Use it as a template on how to bring to film a beloved British institution and not offend entire generations of parents in particular with the monstrosity that you'd cooked up.

Yeah it's a slow start alright, but it builds the characters up nicely and Giamatti is scene stealing with both dialogue and character traits.

Puss In Boots: The Last Wish (2022) - 8/10

Strong fairy tale story with some very entertaining parodied characters as villains but it was a lot darker and had more self-reflection and character growth than expected.

Great use of mixed animation styles to make the action scenes stand out and the pacing was good with never a dull moment.

There was plenty of quirky humour and the song was fun, but the voice actor for Puss didn’t sound right and the human characters didn’t look right.
