What film did you watch last night?

Watched Toy Story 3 today and what a excellent movie it is - definitely 9/10.

Pixar continues to make some of the most enjoyable movies I've seen with so much thought going into them.

The A-Team.

Better than I thought it would be, and even laughed at some of the lines said in the movie (wasn't expecting to find it funny at all) 7/10.

The Third Man - overpaid for the criterion blu but well worth it. Excellent film. 10/10

American Psycho - Hadn't watched this for quite some time but enjoyed it a lot. 7.5/10

The good, the bad and the weird. 7/10

Its like a Korean film parody of the US western. Opening third was awesomeness. The action scenes really well done. But overall a bit long perhaps and ran out of steam by the end.

Enjoyed this as well. Surprised me thou since the director Ji-woon Kim, his movies are normally a lot darker. This was a nice change.

His new movie is supposed to be good (I Saw the Devil).

Over the past few weeks I've seen (or been dragged along to) -

Little Fockers - 4/10 Same old story with nothing new added "Jack catches Greg in a innocent mishap and hilarious consequences follow" and a criminal misuse of Jessica Alba in her pants and bra.

Green Hornet - 7/10 OK start, poor middle but great finale (switch off brain time) - shame the bad guy is so poor/under-whelming which is a surprise considering his previous film.

Love and Other Drugs - 5/10 Standard hollywood love story "boy meets high strung girl, they argue, fall in love, he makes a mistake, they split, he realises his mistake, chases her down, get back together, end film" 10/10 for Anne Hathaway's fairly constant nakedness tho'!

Kings Speach - 9.5/10 Fantastic film, 2 hrs just flew by. A little dip in the middle but only for about 10mins or so. HBC as the Queen Mother is especially good (considering she's just a bit part really)

Paranormal Activity 2 - 6.9/10

Not sure why but I think this kind of style is pretty effective, maybe just because it's something different to 90% of the horror films churned on in the last few decades that you just become desensitized to.

Good stuff :)

Having said that a major flaw is them staying in the house and not getting the hell out :p

Alice in Wonderland (2010) - 6/10

I found it a bit frustrating, as though it should have been a lot better than it was. As it was, it was good up to a point, but forgettable. The acting was generally good - Alice and The Hatter were both great - but the characters themselves were either patchy or underused. Anne Hathaway didn't really get much to work with in terms of characterisation, and the caterpillar could have had more to do. The plot was OK, but it was executed in too much of a smug, knowing fashion at times. Because the story is contingent on re-treading old ground, but without it being a pure remake, it felt like the characters knew we were watching them do things a second time round - "This is not a remake, but we're doing much the same tea party scene again, which should be tiresome, but because we, the characters, know this, it is instead clever and a bit post-modern." Ugh. I also felt at times like Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter were phoning it in a bit, like they were there because they could be relied on to be weird, but they didn't actually have enough to go on. The characters weren't full enough. The Hatter, for example: walking the full length of a dining table, and damn the afternoon tea laid out, is compellingly mad. Doing a stupid dance in which your head spins round on your neck is just silly. Similarly, his and the red queen's accents kept shifting, but it never felt like it was because they were mad, but just because... well, I don't know why.

On the plus side... The film was absolutely visually spectacular. This is definitely the best lookin film I have seen in a long time. The landscapes and the scenery were amazing. It really looked other worldly, while also looking realistic, or at least authentic. Perhaps when you're rendering something so inherently unreal, it's easier to avoid falling into the uncanny valley because the viewer has no frame of reference to say whether a giant luminous purple toadstool isn't quite right. The costumes were also great, particularly The Hatter's kilt and some of Alice's dresses. The one the red queen put on her was stunning.

So... Technically incredible, but the rest, not so much.

Finally watched the last version of "I am Legend". I'm so glad I didn't pay money to see it in the cinema because it's rubbish. But it did make me listen to Bob Marley again, and I now need to reread the book for the first time in thirty years. But yet again Hollywood films a great book and throws away the whole central premise, AND the whole point of that book.
