What retro things have you done today?

@LewisRaz Perhaps consider using nlite to slipstream the unofficial SP4 pack for XP. That's what I did and it saves me a lot of hassle when doing a new install. Contains every update released post-SP3, plus .net runtimes.

Normally I wouldn't recommend unofficial service packs (don't really rate the ones for Win98, Autopatcher whilst being selective over updates is better IMO), but this worked well for me.

I will check it out although I am also skeptical about unofficial service packs. I tend to keep my installs as vanilla as possible. Dont really like phils dos pack as helpful as it is...

Going to have to try something with this XP install tho!

This arrived today and I just got it set up:

Actual game changer. Now I can always have the main one set up while tinkering with other PCs and not have to keep reaching for cables all the time.

So @Firestar_3x, I've found my S3 Virge/DX and am tempted to do a build with (at least one) Voodoo II 12MB alongside my Socket 7 board (the one that currently houses the P233MMX), but the Virge currently only has the 4MB onboard and nothing populated in the 4 expansion sockets. Does yours have the expansion memory, and if so is it the same spec as the onboard memory? I'm tempted to order some but it'll be different brand and likely a different ns rating due to availability.

EDIT: Also 3D tested the 9800GT finally. It seems fine, passed a run on 3DMark2003 with flying colours.

Do it!

Are you sure it has 4mb? I thought the chips are 256k each, cards came in 2mb or 4mb trims with the 4mb cards having either all the slots populated or all soldered onto the board.

Was looking around last week and most cards seem to have matching chips, i think these are the chips for mine:

The card i dug out of storage is only 2mb, deffo got a 4mb someplace.

Don't think i can run the K6-2 in my Socket 7 board, unfortunately no 2.2v option for the core, lowest i can go is 2.8.

Looks like i'll be sticking the 233mmx in, should still be a good upgrade from the PR200 currently in it.

@Firestar_3x you are right, I was thinking about upgrading to 4MB. They are indeed 256x16 chips for 2MB onboard with 2MB of open slots.

Shame your board doesn’t go down to 2.6v as the K6-2s and 3s will safely run at 2.6v (a common overvolt for overclocking) so long as you have a half-decent HSF.

I do have an interposer here that regulates a standard 3.3v Pentium Socket 7 board down to 2.1v for a K6 series CPU.

Mine didnt but there was a fairly easy mod to allow it.

Perhaps yours has a similar mod?

Does anyone have a good source for old ATI drivers? I have installed the XP SP4 but still having bother.

Guru3d still has the driver section up, remember them having some good modded drivers for all types of cards: https://www.guru3d.com/files-categories/videocard-drivers.html

They have the articles and pages up, but most of the download links are dead if my recent endeavours to grab stuff from there are anything to go by (unless I was unlucky with the 5 or so drivers I tried to get), and unfortunately due to the way they handled their download slots, the wayback machine doesn’t have the downloads cached :(
