Which MMORPG are you looking forward to?

There aren't many successful mmo's out there really, not with World of Warcraft still kicking about.

Whatever Blizzard announce next (mmo's wise) will be what I pay attention to.

The mmo's since WoW have been a huge let down, EvE does well, but thats because its not trying to compete with Warcraft, it's not fantasy.

Until Warcraft is dead, Companies need to stop trying to make RPG fantasy MMO's.

They're not going to do very well.

You do know WoW wasnt the first, and isn't the best, by a long, long way? WoW just copied and polished what games like EQ started.

I cant wait to try Darkfall personaly, but need to wait until I can convince the annoying network admins at uni to open the required ports. Until then I will be missing UO, and making do with WoW. Although WoW is one of the most polished PvE MMO's, I think it has a lot to answer for in terms of killing the genre.

none of them, all mmos take over your life(if u want to be no1) and cost lots of money to be top of the tree...no point being second place is there....

What a strange, stupid thing to say. There is not a scoreboard (besides the bounty board system in UO and similar, but in a general sense) in MMO's, people make their own personal goals, aims and objectives. Someone who plays a MMO for 10 hours a day doesn't necessarily enjoy it any more than someone who plays for a couple, or less. Nobody is first, second or last - People are just enjoying the game in their own way.

Really enjoying the DAoC trial, playing a hunter on a classic server. Pity the servers are nearly dead :(. Won't be spending money on the game unless the origins server comes out. Seems kind of pointless to play when i know i wont be in 14 days time so stopped for now. Back to single player games for now i think until Darkfall gets sorted.

I could have written that!

Been jumping from mmo to mmo lately trying to find something that will stick. Eventually went back to DAoC on the US servers and made a hunter! Enjoyed it but a quick /who from time to time confirmed that no amount of nostalgia was going to make this worthwhile :(

Doesn't help that the zergs are rr10+ either :/ I've gone back to simulators tbh. Silent Hunter 4 at the mo.. DCS: Black Shark on order. Bit of DoD:S in between and /e

Was planning on doing it aswell, downloaded, ridiculously slow patching with no where on earth around that hosts the update files making it a pain in the ass. I also didn't realise euro/us servers had a different accounts thing :(

Signing up for an account now and it seems to be asking for a CC info, for trial, which seems meh.

OK, so the english trial gives you access to everything, the US trial sends you to a download which doesn't include catacombs, which apparently the trial includes, its all ridiculous tbh. Ok its old but they still change £8 a month if you actually do pay for it so really the service should match any other current mmo's.

It said I could play it but parts of the game might not work, tried it anyway and it just semi froze the system. Not overly impressed so far.

Well FFXI was installed, played for 20 minutes and uninstalled. Terrible UI, terrible graphics, playonline thingy is awful, combat is rubbish. The whole game just doesnt feel right and the menu options when fighting etc is so clunky. Back to waiting for Darkfall lol.

aww well if u can look past the dated gfx and the clunky interface its a really good team based game. you wont need to use the menus ever once you make some macros. a boss they released middle of last year only got defeated for the first time like last month. the stupidly hard infamous bosses were 1 of the things i really loved about that game but ill admit it's deffinitly not for everyone.

Unfortunately all MMORPGs tend to very heavily reward 'time played' over 'skill level'.

I got to level 59 in WOW before I worked out that WHATEVER I did I was going to get better and better and it wasn't actually a reflection of my ability at all, my level was more a reflection of what a lack-of-life I had! Then it felt like I'd been conned somehow (!!)

Now will only play multiplayer games where skill level is the deciding factor .. not 'I played for 12 hours a day so have the sword of whoppingness so you lose hahaha'

Jumpgate Evolution.

I played the original and it was a massive timesink for me, played it for 3 years, loved it... the best part was that you didn't have to be level 60 to beat a level 60... it was about skill not just about what equipment you had.

I am starting to lose faith in MMOs...most notably cos I played Matrix Online for a solid 2yrs...I took time off it back in Aug 2008 and went back on only Feb 2009 for a month. Nothing has changed...all you get is the usual: new items and clothing of which you have to work your sodding ass off for and most of the time its pointless.

However, my faith has been slightly restored by the news announced last year that SOE (bad people that they are anyway) are releasing DC Universe Online. Being a big Superman fan I was very pleased with this news and cannot wait for it. I have seen the videos of the concept art and the gameplay and it is looking tasty!!

Another game that is being released in MMO is Need For Speed. Yes thats right Need For Speed is going online and the best bit is...its going to FREE!!! :D I dont know what the prices are for DCUO but knowing Sony they will most likely charge. But to be able to drive around in a souped up Nissan Skyline GTR with other like minded racers in a world where almost anything is possible...it will be interesting to see how NFS fares as an MMO. I believe its due for released around Sept/Oct 2009.

I've just heard that EverQuest 3 is unofficially in development, and it will very likely be multiplatform. No details on it other than that. So I suppose that and the Bioware one are the only MMO's I'm really interested in.

The Blizzard MMO will be a watered down version of WoW, btw. They're not going to re-invent the wheel. Don't expect challenge in WoW 2.0, expect a heavy emphasis towards solo and one group play with a UI that tells you what to do at every point. It will be horrible (unless you've never played an MMO before).

The new starwars one. Old republic 3 - Its made by Bioware. I have faith in Bioware to produce a good game.

Wholeheartedly agree, bioware can sort this I know it. I can't wait.

For the short term i'm waiting for the new world of warcraft Ulduar patch (for Tier 8 content).

Considering Darkfall as it is like ultima online in the old days (whoever you kill you can loot everything rule, housing system etc).

^^ and you are the smart one working for blizzard huh?

Just examine the patterns.

Each successive MMO since EQ/UO has became a little bit easier each time. Ask any EQ/UO player, and they'll tell you that. And since WoW vanilla, each succesive expansion has became a little bit easier each time. Ask anyone here. Less and less challenge, easier and easier. People can call it "more accesible" but that means "more watered down".

MMO's are becoming very heavily biased toward solo and casual play. Blizzard is at the forefront of this design change, and it is proving to be very profitable for them. They will continue to go in the direction they're headed because it's profitable to do so. Why wouldn't they? Why would they gamble on making an MMO that features risk and challenge when their accountants are all telling them "make it even easier than the last".

I'm really looking forward to star trek online. Had a brief go on Wow & dabbled with Eve but haven't really sold my soul to any MMO, I'm thinking that could all change with STO! I'm quite a big trekkie but I think this game will be accessible to anyone whilst still being good for the hardcore. There's been some really terrible star trek games released in the past so I'm hoping this doesn't disappoint & can revitalise the ST fanbase. Even if the game sucks, it will be a good place for fans to get together to discuss the new film!
Anyone else gonna give this game a try?

IMO the genre is nearly dead. World of Warcraft has pretty much destroyed all hope for new innovative MMORPG's to appear in the western gaming market.

Yes Bioware are making the new Star Wars game but I'm pretty certain it wont be all that different than WoW, and too be perfectly honest, I dont think Bioware are the same Bioware of old. These companies want as many people as possible to play the game and its World of Warcraft that set the standard in terms of the direction MMO's need to go in order to be a huge financial success.

The very nature of MMORPGs are flawed, you cant have a perfect one because many people want different things. So when a game tries to fix everything, it turns into WoW and to my recent experience Everquest 2, and look at what SOE did to Star Wars Galaxies... they destroyed a really interesting and unique game while trying to turn it into WoW.

These games simply throw gifts at you constantly until you no longer have any point or goal to play for and during your time spent in the game, you've hardly met any worthwhile people to spend time online with because there is no point in grouping or actually meeting people.

IMO FFXI had the best format. Each job in a party was incredibly descriptive with a unique role. Although it was a very cooky-cutter game in terms of having the right equipment, it was also incredibly skill dependent in the role you played. You had to know your job and do it in harmony with other people, unlike WoW where you can literally just power blast through mobs and every so often throw a heal or a buff etc.

Another thing about FFXI that made it so much better than the common muck thats in the market is a sense of achievment. Gaining that extra level really meant something, you could also see the increase in your character. Gaining that item you spent ages trying to get, again really meant something because you could see it affect your job. There was a sense of purpose, gaining access to that new area really felt like you had come a long way from the fields outside of SandOria etc.

Yes the game had flaws, especially in the time department and difficulty level (especially in later levels) but again all this did was bring you closer to other players and make lots of friends and gain a reputation based not on what equipment you had, but on who you are and how well you know your job and work in a party.

Give me a MMORPG that separates my class from all others and REQUIRES me to join other people to progress in the game world. Whats the point in paying a subscription for a game that plays just like an offline RPG.

The only MMORPG I would be relatively excited about would be another FFXI type MMORPG from a Japanese dev, as these people aren't as tainted from WoW as western devs are.
