Who owns a Golf GTD / GTI / R?

Was the R Estate available as a MY16, or was it released as MY17? I can't find a definitive answer, even on the vwroc.com forum.

If it was updated for MY17, what was included apart from the basic Discover?

MY17 has the Winter Pack as standard as well (Heated Seats , Heated Washer & Washer Low warning )

Might be worth asking that question on VWROC ;)

I'd imagine that the leasing sites showing [Nav] and no [Nav] are supplying the older MY for the no nav option and milking in the extra till stock has run out?

Possible , but i cant see any of them having stock lying around to be honest. At the moment there is quite a long lead time of at least 16 weeks due to supply issues that has plagued VW productions in the factories in Germany.

I have yet to take delivery of mine and i have been ordered on the start of June ...

It might be worth getting the Climate Windscreen , which will be handy in the winter to clear the windscreen super quick.

The problem I have is that I'm desperately trying to not order a new one. The oldest Estates are now a year old, so I would quite like to save a few grand and still have the balance of the warranty. For this reason, I can't be too picky with the options.

The spec I want is about £30.4K for a new order which is a hair over my self-imposed limit. I've seen Estates on the VW site for 27-28K so the savings aren't as big as I had hoped for. I think some I'll have to negotiate hard.

I still need to go test drive the following:

  1. Skoda Octavia VRS
  2. BMW 330d/335d Xdrive
  3. Audi A4 Avant 190PS B9

Anyway, I don't want to litter this thread with my purchasing decision :)

Sensible choices , im assuming all of those listed are in an Estate guise ?> If so the XDrive are the only 4WD/AWD ones there.

Surely if you can try harder and get the R Estate in the spec you want for sub £30K , unless you go mad with the options.

Sorry, I was walking and typing on my phone so I missed a few things. Yes they're all estates and I would like AWD over RWD, but FWD is acceptable hence the Octavia. I wrote "252PS" for the B9 A4 but I meant the 190PS model because it's possible to get a demo car for £31k on the Audi Approved site.

The only options I added to the R Estate quote were:

Metallic paint
Dynaudio
DCC
Rear camera
Rear airbags

I'd love the 19" Pretoria wheels too, so maybe I'll include them.

EDIT: Just got another quote on CarWow for my spec and it's for £28971. £1495 cheaper than the previous best quote!

Without the rear bags and Pretorias , im getting about £30.2K , thats before the £2K contribution from VWFS so i think it is deffo doable.

Big monies coming up on the edition 30 next week..

Two new PS4 tyres for the front
Major service
Air con service
Brake fluid change
Mot

it's all a little too much to handle money wise :o

Going to try a garage in Solihull called MotorservUK solihul. From the pictures it looks like a clean workshop specialising in the German marques, anyone heard of it? Handily it's just around the corner from work.

Alternatively anyone have any good experiences with anyone else in Birmingham?

Got to treat it well... just wondering whether I should make a trip to the evo triangle to use up the last remaining scraps of the tyres left!!

Really disappointed with the Golf R after my test drive today :( I had such high hopes for it as a bit of a diehard VW fan.

The steering wheel is very thin and doesn't feel anywhere near sporty enough. The 6 speed DSG box is really starting to show its age and can feel quite dimwitted at times. The cabin quality is quite poor in places, especially the handles on the doors. The engine is really quiet and you can't hear the exhaust at all. My S1 sounds much more fruity on WOT.

I went and had a look at the 3 series Touring, X1 and X3 too, but as soon as I stepped back into the new A4 Avant I knew it was the car for me. It's such a cut above everything else.

Sorry to poo on the R owners, but if you love it then I wish you very many happy miles because at the end of the day it's a cracking car but I think I'm looking for a different experience.

I think I'm looking for a different experience.

The GR is a hot hatch, all of the other cars you mentioned are not hot hatches. They are family cruisers/rep mobiles. For example The A4 190PS does 0-60 in 7.7 seconds, The GR does 0-60 in 4.9 seconds. They cost ( roughly? ) the same amount of money - so yeah, you'd expect the bells and whistles to be lower quality on the GR.

Also, I'm not 100% sure, as mine hasn't arrived yet - still waiting for delivery, but I think you need to enable sports mode to get the exhausts to sing - all other modes are quieter?

Race mode......

Even in the gearbox's sport setting or in Race mode, the exhaust pops are definitely on the quiet side. If you had the radio turned up you would battle to hear them.

I wanted a hot estate. The Golf R is pretty much perfect on paper for me. 300BHP, AWD, standard spec such as ACC, heated seats etc, and a huge boot in a car that's ~4.5m long. I realise that compromises have to be made, but they've cut corners on the things that make a difference to people that want to pay this much for a car, ie. the steering wheel and the trim you touch.

I really don't want to trash this thread. I went in open-minded really expecting to end up in a Golf R but I think after driving BMWs and Audis, I am finding it difficult to take one step backwards.

Enjoy your car when it arrives :) Despite my bitching it's still one of the very best modern hot hatches.
