Who owns a Golf GTD / GTI / R?

Even in the gearbox's sport setting or in Race mode, the exhaust pops are definitely on the quiet side. If you had the radio turned up you would battle to hear them.

I wanted a hot estate. The Golf R is pretty much perfect on paper for me. 300BHP, AWD, standard spec such as ACC, heated seats etc, and a huge boot in a car that's ~4.5m long. I realise that compromises have to be made, but they've cut corners on the things that make a difference to people that want to pay this much for a car, ie. the steering wheel and the trim you touch.

I really don't want to trash this thread. I went in open-minded really expecting to end up in a Golf R but I think after driving BMWs and Audis, I am finding it difficult to take one step backwards.

Enjoy your car when it arrives :) Despite my bitching it's still one of the very best modern hot hatches.

I see where you're coming from - I have to admit if I was spending £30k+ of my own money then I wouldn't be buying a GR. I'm only getting one because the lease deals are a bit crazy, and I have all my cash tied up in other projects at the moment, so the cash flow aspect works for me right now. I'm coming from a BMW, and if I was looking for something to waft around in for £30k then it would be a 335. If I wanted something a bit more special then I'd be getting a 3 year old RS4.

What the hell? I thought the Golf R was a V6. Discovering that it's a force fed four just destroyed the whole image of the car for me :(

I remember seeing a MK4 R32 for the first time. Nobody had seen it yet, it was still top secret and we were doing a boiler build & install at a VW dealer in Holland. In the back was this blue Golf which looked muscly and menacing, it was instantly obvious that this was no regular Golf. I'll never forget that day, and a few days later it was revealed in the press. I felt so awesome seeing it first :D

Only the Mk4 and Mk5 R32 came with the 3.2 VR6, the change to the 2.0T came with the Mk6 and also saw them drop the 32 reference.

Ah right, gotcha. I remember the 32 meaning that it was a 3.2 litre with 320bhp, and I'm sure they squeezed another stat ouf of the 32, but can't for the life of me remember what it was.

Just shows how out of touch I am with these things nowadays

3.2 was the only relevant reference in the R32 name, they weren't 320bhp, the mk4 was 240bhp, mk5 was 250bhp.

You could probably make an argument it also referred to the 3.2mpg you were likely to get out of it though :p
