Who owns a Golf GTD / GTI / R?

Can't get over how good the ride is compared to my 335i Convertible, the M sport suspension and run flat tyres meant the ride was beyond harsh, the GTD feels like a limousine in comparison!

Yeah my old car was black, looks lovely when it clean but is always dirty again about 5 minutes later!

Dyanaudio is fun and the interior finish/quality is excellent.

Said he took apart a golf r which I'm not sure if he's exaggerating or what lol.

possibly challenged a stock Mk6 R, doubt a mapped 2wd GTD would trouble a Mk7R

Joined VWROC a month ago as I've ordered a 7R Estate, some of the comments are keyboard unfriendly ridiculous in there :)

by that I mean laughing uncontrollably while drinking tea/coffee

I've had my GTD for 3 weeks now. Carbon grey with no options :D

I must say I am really enjoying it, I moved from a 320d ED with quite a lot of options to save myself around £100 a month and I think I prefer the Golf!

I'm not a big fan of the ACC though so far, it will take some getting used to. It seems to start braking on the motorway before you would normally pull out to overtake, so I keep having to either compensate with the pedal or pull out when there's still a big gap, this is on the closest setting too. Also if you wait for a car to go past and pull out just after them it brakes as they're so close, even though they are pulling away. Also having the speed limiter on the same button is annoying as I've put that on a few times by mistake and only noticed when my speed starts dropping :)

Same here - I've put it down to it being very safe. Oh which it is. Can't complain I suppose in that sense. It's doing what it's been designed to do.

Don't pull out so damn close to the car infront then?

With ACC on you need to adapt your driving style (ie safer) to allow the ACC to do it's job.

It is a brilliant system, even more so in my DSG GTI... Haven't got the Mrs to start using it yet though.

Yeah but I think it goes a bit too far, say you are in the left lane, waiting for a car to pass you before you pull out to overtake, you have to wait for the car to get some way down the road or it will brake. It's not what you would normally consider too close and you wouldn't normally wait for that car to move to the stopping distance past you before you pull out.

Friend of mine who owns a VAG specialist garage has replaced an Audi A3 with a GTD.

Fantastic car, looks smart on the inside and out.

He much prefers it to the A3 it replaces, says he won't be chipping this one but we shall see!

I've had the new A3 for over 2 years now and looking for a change i tested a GTD for a week did enjoy it but personally rather be in the Audi everyday just for me a nicer place to be and the B&O sound system is amazing in mine better than the dyno audio the golf had.

Anyway lucky the golf after i speced it up was pushing 34k which was crazy for a GTD golf so ruled it out.

Crazy for a golf but you're already driving a golf with a different body kit and are paying a premium for the Audi badge? Makes sense

Its the other way around the Audi was out first so the golf is a cheaper body kit than the audi :) and its a company car so it was a easy choice as the audi was cheaper than the golf through our NHS work scheme when it first came out.

I would have a gti or a R golf (came very close to ordering a R a month ago) but i personal don't think the GTD looks special enough compared to those 2 to command the price it does its nippy but after a week i was used to it and didn't feel like it something i would enjoy everyday.

Regarding the ACC, I'm not a huge fan of it but I realise the benefits far out weigh the negatives. Not sure if its a faulty sensor but there have been a few times where it has almost got me into trouble ie randomly comes on even if im not accelerating towards a stopped car etc. Few times ive pulled out at a junction and the car ahead of me is stopped, its not like im accelerating hard or anything ie I know its a stopped car but it just comes on.

Been like that from day one so i guess its working as Ive taken it into the dealership and they have investigated it but have come back with no faults.

On the other hand, last august was driving back and there was a red van ahead of me. I didnt even realise the muppets brake lights werent even working but ACC saved my car from rear ending the fool. I was coming up behind him and didnt even know he had braked but ACC did and slammed the brakes on for me before I rear ended him.

On the whole, almost a yr with the car and I absolutely love it. Always taking it for a night time blast when the roads are empty...probably one of the reasons why i dont get great mpg out of it lol:p. But who cares??, car is meant to be driven like you stole it:p

To be fair he previously had a god aweful 1.6 diesel on lease, but engine aside he still prefers the golf. This time the Golf has been purchased out right so be interesting to see if he says the same thing in 6 months time or hops back into an Audi!

Had a GTD in 2009 when they came out and enjoyed it. Now have a 328i on company car lease which is costing me 700 quid a month all told!

Thinking of leaving the car scheme and buying a GTD or A3 with the same engine. Looks like for about 10-11k you can get a 4-5 year old example with 60k ish.

Anything to be aware of mechanically or any reliability issues?
Any thoughts on what I could expect to lose over three years / 30k miles?

I need one with cruise and Bluetooth as a minimum so might be constrained in choice!

GTD/GTI/R all come with Adaptive cruise control as standard and Bluetooth as they have either the Discovery or Discovery Pro.

The only problem is the rear shocks on them, some are reporting knocking noises even after 3 or 4 replacement units putting in. Doesn't seem to be an issue if the car has DCC, mine doesn't but I have had no issues with them.

My 59 GTD had passive cruise as an option and no Bluetooth despite having the touchscreen and dynaudio... ?

The 328 is a company car so 290 a month is BIK co2 tax. The rest is the salary sacrifice impact.

So no engine concerns of note?

Thanks

Check the price of the GTE on your company car scheme, it was £700 a month on a 2 year lease when I ordered my GTD, now it's reduced to £360 with both lease providers... would have saved me another £100 a month as the tax is only £55ish!

(that's £360 by salary sacrifice)

But this some how came back to nearly £400 when i put a proper quote in so obviously the Transport system is a tiny bit out i think.

For some comparison this is what the Seat leon 280 comes out for us

SEAT LEON SPORT COUPE 2.0 TSI Cupra 280 3dr 15 £349.34

The bmw 225d i ordered came back 70 cheaper so i took that.

I love the ACC..I got from carlisle to glasgow without having to touch the pedals!

I just set the max speed to 80...lock onto the car in front...if he's doing less than me the car matches him, if I feel he's going too slow, you indicate and as you pull out the car speeds up to its max set speed (assuming theres not another car in the outside lane to lock onto)

so you get past him and pull back in and lock on to the next car in front..adn the car adusts to match your next target

works perfectly

(on quieter roads obviously..I imagine in busier traffic you still have to manually intervene more)

They don't come with Discover/Pro as standard though.

That may be why I heard knocking coming from the rear last night on my GTI. Will get VW to check when it's in for a service soon.
