Who owns a Golf GTD / GTI / R?

I've had a Golf R over this easter weekend from VW, and I have to say it's a very impressive machine.

I had a new A45 the other week so it has some serious competition, and surprisingly I find the Golf to be the better car. Sure, the A45 is more 'mental' and a bit quicker, but the Golf is seriously rapid and far more comfortable at lower speeds and around town, as well as more economical.

The build quality seems pretty good too, comparing it to BMW/Audi/Merc, it's certainly not far behind in most areas.

Recently traded in our Focus ST (MP275) for a Golf R and haven't stopped smiling since... :D

We went for:

5 Door R with DSG gearbox
Black Metallic
19" Pretoria Alloys
Keyless Entry / Go
Dynaudio (SP?!)
Discover Nav Pro

No many options but honestly I didn't need/want many (just the Nav/ upgraded audio were key).

The way it picks up pace compared to the Focus is genuinely surprising. I wasn't expecting a massive difference (300 vs 275PS & heavier) but the combination of increased traction and DSG means the speedo moves noticeably quicker from any speed.

I also want to know who VW "borrowed" to work on the chassis / steering and brakes. It certainly wasn't the person who worked on the old MKV R32... It somehow manages to be both firm and compliant over bumps (even on 19" wheels it is better than the Focus) and has steering which is both direct and not totally devoid of feel..

It hurts my brain!

The new VW Golf GTI Clubsport S just took the Nurburgring lap record for front-wheel-drive cars @ 7m 49 secs.

It looks pretty good too (for a Golf)

In before, Nurburgring lap times are irrelevant for everyday uses yada, yada....

I think it looks awful tbh. Take away the stripe on the bottom side and the silly gill things on the front bumper, maybe the black spoiler on the boot and paint the mirrors the same colour as the body.

I don't like this new trend where hatchbacks are getting stuff that supercars get, the CTR is the worst for it. Looks terrible

Incredibly old story that one. They released the concept, it was a hit. They announced it as official, and took deposits. My local dealer offered me a chance on one. Ain't heard anything since mind.

lol?

Have you seen standard older Golfs? Pretty much all the things you've mentioned are exactly how the mk2 was back in the day and hardly detract from it. However the fact it's only got two seats is quite silly really.

On the topic of the GTIs actually owned by people, I recently bought most of the bits I need to upgrade my brakes from 239mm to 280mm...but I may well not fit it and go for something else, potentially bigger. :D

Why do you want bigger brakes? You have 7bhp:confused:

I just think the money would be better spent elsewhere. Surely the standard brakes are fine even with an extra 50bhp+ over standard?

Nope. The 8v has 239mm discs, the 16v 256mm and the mk2 G60 & mk3 16v 280mm and the mk3 VR6 288mm.

That would suggest that the standard brakes on the 8v aren't exactly very good if you increase the power at all and in my experience they aren't brilliant. Changing to 280mm is a fairly common upgrade for mk1s and mk2s, usually costs a lot, I got a bargain (genuine, unlike Acme).

Looking at some of these pictures, really miss my Mk5 GTi :-( Will definitely have to get a Mk5 R32 Once the kids are older...if they're not taxed off the road!

I want GTI DSG, I've got about £15K to spend. I've seen a 2012 GTI with around 30K for £16k.

Can I bargain with a VW dealer on a second hand one?

I get the feeling they don't like cash buyers and prefer people to pay by finance , which is at a high rate.

Cash always has more haggling power :D

I reckon you could get 1k off (or more) easily.

Not for cash, cash, as they get charged for banking cash. Last two cars I payed for with a credit card. If you agree to the paint protection and Gap and wheel insurance to start with the salesman will lower the price and when at what you want to pay say you don't want any of them. Mine threw in 3 years GAP insurance as part of the deal.
