Why is AMD quiet about black screens on 290x?

Okay I think I found a way to solve my specific problem (which is that my monitor loses signal, but the game still runs in the background). Previously I had to reduce the core clock to 920MHz.

Now I found that reducing both the core voltage and aux voltage to -44 (I keep the Power Limit at +50), I can play at stock clocks. I have tested BF4, Assassin's Creed 4 and Batman Arkham Origins and no loss of signal to my monitor yet.

Does this mean it's definitely a driver problem for me and not hardware? I really don't want to rma this card.

Its a driver issue. Dont RMA just YET.

No black screens so far for me in bf4 (in fact not one crash of any kind all day)

Although the FPS seems to fluctuate a lot more than previous drivers. Might be my imagination but doesn't seem to play BF4 as smooth??

Any one else tried these drivers in Bf4 yet?

Butter smooth for me. I guess you're subconsciously looking for an error in this driver :D

Uninstalling seems just as likely to cause problems. AMD made a big deal a few years ago about how new drivers don't force a reboot of the system, so now I just install over the top of old drivers unless I have problems. Then I use the included AMD uninstall utility rather than any third party apps that can make things worse.

I cant belive its not a norm here to use DDU or at the VERY LEAST uninstall the old drivers before install new ones...

not sure what your implying , I used DDU to remove previous drivers and i have no performance tab in the new beta 9.4 drivers. removing the 9.4 catalyst control centre and installing the control centre from beta 9.2 brings the performance tab back.

if you still have the performance tab in 9.4, overdrive probably isn't functioning correctly.

apologies if your post wasn't directed at me.

Well i dont. So i did it correctly.

lol you might be right , but you can't blame me for being a little "Paranoid"

I still can't understand why some "never" had the problem in the first place.

But I repeat ...No Black Screen! Yay ! :)

As for benchmarking, I scored the same in Heaven 2.5 (older version) with these drivers and the previous Beta drivers.

I am pretty sure AMD have down tuned something to achieve the stability. I've been dabbling with litecoin mining over last few days on the 290X and after installing these new betas it is mining quite a bit slower.

I ran ALL my ebnchmarks on new 9.2

SAME SCORE EVERYWHERE

Another bonus is TriDef finally got profile for bf4 sorted.

I am playing BF4 in 3d now :]
All ultra no msaa 35fps+
I call that good enough :)

No need for tin foil hats just yet.. The drivers seem fine, stability and performance. This is a newer architecture so you would expect a few teething problems. Things will only improve over time. I'm happy with my card , the black screen was the only issue I had. Now it's cool, silent and deadly :p

played BF4 a lot today, not one Black Screen all day :) funny thing is the game seems to run better if I just "Default" the ingame settings to "Ultra" I can live with that!

Happy days for now ! ;)

Boomstick777 what volts are you running for that?

installed the new driver and put the volts up to 1.3, got 1150/1450 but crashed afet 10 mins, no black screen tho :)

I'm running the Power Color OC bios 1030/1250 - http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/147854/powercolor-r9290x-4096-131015-2.html

MSI Afterburner, with these settings:

The voltage doesn't seem to be fixed, it bounces all over the place. Hoping future bios's with fix voltages more, should get rid of artifacts at higher clocks. Some very good modders over @ OCN, hopefully will start dissecting and fixing 29X bios's soon.

Do you guys think flashing the bios on my card might alleviate the monitor signal loss/screen cutting out problem I have on stock voltages? I've never tried it before.
