***Wimbledon 2017 Official Thread***

Are you backing her opponent because you don't deem Konta to be British?

And does the same go for Murray because he's a Scot?

Or do you just not like them as people?

I never even mentioned Konta. You did

And Federer is my favourite tennis player ever. I always watch him. I used Murray as an example of another Brit who is not my favourite player when Federer plays. I really don't see what the issue is.

I'm not even going to waste my time explaining why I thought it was odd that you were so explicitly backing Williams. Enjoy the match anyway :)

Didn't expect Konta to get thrashed that badly, barely any better than the first semi-final earlier.

I fear it's typically another case of the press building her up when she's just not that good.

Even if counted Konta as British (i dont), I dont really care for player nationalities when it comes to supporting a player. First and foremost i like entertaining style of Tennis or one that creates entertaining games. It is why i love players like Monfils, Tsonga who pull out some great showmanship and know how to generate some crowd enthusiasm. Federer has that unique style which makes him look like he cakewalks matches against players that force even the fastest and fittest on court to use explosive power to get to shots.

I use to dislike Murray more because i didnt like his tennis and his blowing a fuse on court could cost him the game at any point. He has worked hard to improve mentality and overcome that fault, as well as make his tennis more aggressive and competitive but i still prefer watching most other top ranking players to him.

Certainly there is an element of press building her up but Venus on a good day can bully most people on the court and though her head to head with Konta seems even-ish, i cant help but feel that Venus wins and loses some matches all by herself sometime by hitting too many unforced errors with her power-play when she is pushed while not on good form.

Today Williams form looked good and to me it didnt look like she was pushed to hard.

She'll be number 4 in the world next week. The rankings don't lie - you only get there by being consistent. Considering she'd never been past the 2nd round before, you could say she over achieved.

Fantastic performance from Williams, her positioning on the court was exceptional and she didn't give much away today. As for Konta, she's only 26 and players don't appear to peak until their 30's now so she's got plenty of time to reach the final and win Wimbledon :D

Typically, all the part-time, self-proclaimed tennis experts come out of the woodwork when Wimbledon is on, but you'll all be back where you came from in a couple of days.

Have a little look at some of Konta's results over the last year or so, she deserves her ranking.

How is that sharp. He's apparently calling out 'casual sexism' because the guy didn't qualify his statement with 'first male' when talking about his opponent in the MENS Wimbledon competition.

How ****** depressing is it that this is what we are doing now. It now seems we cannot say anything without people shouting 'sexism', 'racism' or some other form of discrimination.
It was sharp to the extent that it was delivered quickly and concisely. It was quite witty. I wasn't making any comment on the accuracy or appropriateness of the comment.

I sort of agree with your general point about the state of eggshell-treading that one has to do these days, however you can be almost certain that if the subject had been the first female player to reach a major semi final since 2009, the interviewer would have said '...the first female US player...'.

See this is what I don't get. Its the idea that we should automatically assume that someone has said something nasty instead of giving them the benefit of the doubt. In the context of the interview it would be natural to assume he was talking about mens tennis. If this was the other way around and someone had forgotten to say "first female US player" no one would even have batted an eyelid.

I guess part of this is that I am sick of the constant bleating about gender equality when all we are moving towards currently is an unfair system that artificially rewards womens sports simply because they compete in the same tournament. The world doesn't and shouldn't work like that. Badminton doesn't pay as well as tennis because there is no money in the sport. Why does that logic not stand true when it comes to men and womens tennis.
