Windows 10

I think ms actually took my advice lol

They have restricted updates to existing inside program users and now stopped new users from joining only to get a free upgrade. Hopefully I get a free win10 without having a win7 or 8 installed previously.

If I upgrade to windows 10 now form windows 8.1, will I retain the RTM activation status at all?

Or is that a no go?

I already have a preview account also. :)

So, to clarify before I go ahead and do it.

I'm currently on a fresh Windows 10 install (Preview), latest build.

Can I wipe this completely, install Windows 7, reserve my key, install the preview over (As upgrade), and then come the 29th it'll just update to final retail?

Cheers.

just upgraded my 8.1 Pro retail to 10240, went fine, but found a load of my program shortcuts are missing, the programs still work but have to find the .exe's to run them from.

The Windows Update process to install 10 Preview over 8.1 has been disabled.

Updated from Win 8.1 pro on my laptop from windows update and have been getting the new builds. I did a disk clean up to free up some space on my c drive, will it still remember my windows key from 8.1 pro as I don’t know where it is?

I've just done the reservation from the tray icon on Windows 7. Normally, I like to do a fresh format when going for a new OS - is this necessary and will I even be able to do this or will I have to install 7 SP1, then upgrade from that to 10 any time I format? (as people obviously won't have a physical copy). I presume if going for 10 on a new machine, a new copy of windows 10 would need to be purchased as 7 would recognise hardware changes before the install of 10?

I was wanting to do a clean install myself. Looks like I will have to upgrade over this 8.1 installation.

Would prefer to download an ISO and do a clean install going forward.

OK I have now activated my 10240 Pro build from a clean install.

If you use this key and do this in an elevated command prompt it should activate. You must have completed the Win 10 upgrade option on the machine.

You need to do these one at a time waiting for confirmation of each.

slmgr /ipk W269N-WFGWX-YVC9B-4J6C9-T83GX

slmgr /skms kms.xspace.in

slmgr /ato

This will hopefully activate Win 10 Pro. It might take a few attempts.

Via a twitter post I've seen it seems MS are offering "retail" versions of Win10 on USB from late August potentially.

A competitor's american website has it listed for ~$120

Microsoft have already confirmed Retail and OEM prices for Windows 10. $129 for Home and $199 for Pro from memory (for Retail, OEM will be a bit cheaper).
