Windows 10

Can you buy an Apple system without an OS?

And can you legally run OSX on anything other than Apple hardware?

When you buy a mac it has OS X on it. There's no option to have it arrive without. You can then remove it and install something else if you want. e.g. linux. Although most people recommend keeping OS X as well just so you can get firmware updates.

I believe it's against the T&Cs of OS X to run it on anything other than Apple Hardware. However, you can legally buy a copy of OS X and install it onto other hardware (with some special tools aka hackintosh). People who have hackintoshs haven't necessarily pirated anything.

Don't want to derail the thread, but if you can find me PC alternatives to the likes of the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro Retina, Mac Pro, iMac, iMac 5K that are as good a package, as well built, with as good support, for the same price... go ahead. I bet you can't though.

You say you can build a 6 core, 12 threaded Hackintosh with 4K monitor and GTX 980 for £2k... but not in the same form factor. Then you have the fact that you have to build it yourself, deal with various different manufacturers if anything goes wrong, etc etc. It just isn't the same at all.

If you can't see that Apple hardware is competitive then you're a deluded PC fanboy... as shown by all the replies guffawing at what I said in the first place.

Anyway, is Windows 10 preview anywhere near usable yet? Or are people still having problems with DirectX?

Let's not turn this into a Apple / Microsoft debate. Keep it on track gents :)

In the meantime, I've jumped back to a 8.1 install. I was getting too many crashes in TF2.

Loved the Desktop experience though, like 8.1 but with a few more GUI tweaks

Not really the current builds are very much alpha/beta, they think they have fixed the steamservice.exe crashes but this will come in this months consumer preview which is from the awesome build branch which I suspect will be a lot closer to the final product than anything we have seen so far.

Really looking forward to Win 10. I’ve been using win XP since ever and its still on my ten year old 2004 build PC that is my main PC. Getting back into computing and games so need a new Rig later this year to play Dayz and Elite. So old school I bought my first steam game in Tropico 4 just their.

It’s going to be a massive jump for me going from single core and win XP to multiple cores and this new OS. I was a bit disappointed reading about Win8 so I hope they have learned from it and working on a OS they can be proud of. They obviously don’t rate win8 if they are moving on to 10 so quick.

As long as I can have the desktop look close to my XP and have all the fancy new nuts and bolts in the background I’ll be happy. I’m going intel for the new Rig off OC but my old AMD Athlon 64 processor 3400+ at 2.4 GHz and 1.5 GB Ram on a ASUS Board has done me proud. Sticker on the back still says Nov 2004 build. Bought back then waiting for BF2.

Microsoft are back on a three year OS cycle(remember Win8 is over two years old now and be three years in October),they also they skipped Win9 and went straight to Win10,it's not so much as Win8 is bad ,Win10 is similar to Win8.1 with start menu, compliment in many ways.

Personally never had any issues with Vista,Win7,8,some with Win10 but then it's alpha/beta.

Surprised you never jumped to Win7 from XP,I think I phased XP out on my PCs about seven years ago and I would rather go Linux then use XP nowadays.

One thing you should have learned by now is you can't please everybody, there will always be somebody that does not like X or Y in Win10,11,etc..I only judge any OS by my own personal use and not hear say or reviews.

Am I right in thinking that Win10 will be free for Windows 8 owners or did i completely dream that up?

There are a lot of unofficial statements to this so best answer is maybe,

Windows 10 will be free to end users. Probably. Almost certainly. And we'll let you know here as we get confirmation.

When we started this article we said that we thought Windows 10 would be free to consumers, although not to OEMs who purchase licences to put on PCs and laptops they sell. Microsoft has declined to answer direct questions about how much Windows 10 will cost, particularly for people upgrading from Windows 7 or XP saying, "we want to talk about the overall product family [at this stage]". And, to be fair, it probably hasn't made a final decision on this.

According to Indonesian news site Detik, the president of Microsoft Indonesia, Andreas Diantoro, has confirmed that Windows 9 - now 10 - will be a free upgrade for all Windows 8 users. That may have been speaking out of turn from someone who doesn't entirely know, but it does chime in with what we suspect will be Microsoft's plan for Windows 10.

Since 2007-8 the PC has just been used for browsing, Email and watching the odd U-tube clip and playing MP3’s at times. I just felt with an aging 2004 build if it worked then I was happy. I’ve never looked at the Win7 requirements in truth. I did the whole 3.1 to Win95 to Win98 then hit XP and just liked it. Buying Win7 just looked like an expense at the time.

Stopped playing games as everything moved on and left my poor old Rig behind and when pushed it was going blue screen of death and it used to play BF2 for hours and hours on end. Only thing I had to buy recently last year was a USB external 1TB HDD to back everything up after a wobble when I thought it had finally given up the ghost. Fresh install of XP after what looked like a HD failure but I think was just Win files going bad and touch wood it’s been ok.

So I’ll be happy if this PC gets me over the line to Win 10 and new PC. The poor thing apart from holidays away has been on every day for a time. Value for money is off the chart for the hours used.

realy looking forward to some more windows updates, hopefully a new build soon.

The main annoyances at the moment:

Start menu items not adding until after a reboot of new application installation.
start menu short cut problems.
the problem where everything goes black and have to restart explorer
the extremely bad sata disk performance.

My only annoyance is when the file explorer randomly decided to start bugging out constantly. It used to be incredibly stable but now the file explorer, start bar and clock are prone to freezes/disappearing.

I'm having the same problem too - I think I will revert back to Win 8.1 until this is resolved.

I have still not seen anythign about the issues of dual graphics as in some Laptops ( Mine is Intel & nVidia ).
I have not bothered trying it out again until I know its going to at least be somewhere near working.

( that said, Even Windows 7 gives me some serious headaches with this Laptop for some reason and only Win 8 works well ? )

New leaked image of an updated build, including the new Spartan browser.

Really love the new theme and I am excited for a new browser as I hate chrome and firefox.
