Windows 10

I have heard that Windows 10 is a free upgrade. Currently I have Windows 8.1 installed (I own retail Windows 8). When I format my OS it is bad enough having to install Windows 8 then install the Windows 8.1 update. So now Will I have to install Windows 10 over that? May have to just buy the standalone disc if it ends up being a drawn out process just to format to Windows 10.

That seems unlikely. Windows 8 Retail followed by Windows 10 Upgrade would be more likely. The 8.1 step seems unnecessary.

Looking forward to this. Will be nice to move from 7 to 10 eventually.

In no rush to try Alphas and RCs - i did it with 7 and had fun.

So is it worth upgrading to windows 10 preview from win7 when it comes out in a few days time? If so will it carry on working until its released?

I'd recommend you make a backup of your Windows 7 install first if you do this. You usually cannot update Previews to full versions (though this may be possible).

Personally, not worth the hassle, wait for the full version to be released.

You will be able to do a clean install using an upgrade key.

There is no need to install Windows 8.0 before upgrading to 8.1.

Killed it off doesnt track with "updates are coming".
Killed off to me at least, means that there are to be no updates or further development done, so two different things..

Problem with it, IMHO was it being ARM based, while theres nothing wrong with ARM, in this sort of device it needs to better supported, I do think there is room in the product line for a 10, or smaller inch screen, but it needs something powerful enough (Atom's have come a long way, perhaps something AMD based?) to run full fat Win10 so it might get away with being slower etc it needs to be able to run peoples favorite browser, media player etc, rather than being its own platform.

They said in the next week, so I assume within 7 days of the conference.

And rt will be win 10, it'll just be like it is with win8/win8.1, like the phone, it won't run win x86 apps, so isn't full win10. That article is really crap.

They've said the Surfaces won't be getting a full Windows 10 update.

If they don't announce another Windows RT (Well, Windows 10 ARM) Surface at Build, would you not call that dead?
At the moment it's not looking good, anyone who thinks it's all positive is living in a fantasy world.

There's not even any Surface ARM (1 or 2) tablets in stock from Microsoft!

For the entirety of its life Windows RT has not delivered with its potential. The ecosystem is miles and miles and miles behind. The gap hasn't gotten smaller, it's gotten larger! Where's any of the Windows Mobile devices with the latest games? Stuck in the dirt.

But no, the defiant say it's not dead. Well that's a great dose of comfort while I don't play KOTOR etc on my Surface. I may's well buy a Sony Ericsson Satio and pretend symbian's flourishing.

With it not getting a proper Windows 10, does that mean no Xbox One Streaming to it too?

EDIT : New build of Windows 10 is available. Microsoft obviously don't know what next week means.
